WT Wizard,
Excellent commentary!
As I read your comments the memories of all those restrictions on us as jw children flashed right back into my mind.
You are right on target.

There are now a significant number of former JW's, myself included, that have converted to Catholicism. Some of belong to a group known as catholicxjw's. The WEB site is www.catholicxjw.com and if anyone is interested in learning more about the catholic faith, we'd be glad to help.

If you wanted to know the truth about how an atheist thinks, would you ask a Jehovah’s Witness? Can you learn the truth about Buddhism from Baptists? We would consider that foolish. I don’t expect anyone here to take my word on what I’ve pointed out regarding Catholic teachings (I do have to admit to being surprised however that people still got things so wrong as I consider others to be more in the know that I am), what I hope is that people will make the effort to go to the source themselves.
Maybe I haven't mention something regarding my past Carl. My dad was a faithfull Orthodox and unfortunately left the Church for WT armageddon crap, Also I do have a very good idea regarding Catholics since my mother was a faithfull Catholic. So having this backround I'm aware of both foundamental Christian religions.
Indeed the Early Chuch was united until the schisma 1040 A.D, although it started around in the 6th century. Both they have the same Church Fathers and Saints. It was a fact that after the first 300 years of persecution that the Church would come out from the Catacombs and became the way it is today. Emperor Constantine in the new capitol of the Roman Empire Constantinouple declared freedom of faith to the Roman Empire. But the structure of the Church was still the same. With Bishops(Episkopous in Greek)Prophets. deacons(diakonous). The Apostolic succesion never ended for the Eastern Part of the Roman Empire(wrongly called Byzantine) Unfortunately the West Part lost this succesion with the schisma.Even now the Emplem of Romania(Byzantine)is the 2 headed Eagle, symbol of the East and West of the Roman Empire, and it is kept by the Church ever since as simple when the East will be United with the West again.
The real reason of this schisma was a political game from the Franks that they decided to devide the East from the West part of the Roman Empire.

In his Easter letter of 367, Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, gave a list of exactly the same books as what would become the New Testament canon, [7] and he used the word "canonized" (kanonizomena) in regards to them. [8] The African Synod of Hippo, in 393, approved the New Testament, as it stands today, together with the Septuagint books, a decision that was confirmed by Councils of Carthage in 397 and 419. These councils were under the authority of St. Augustine, who regarded the canon as already closed. [9] Pope Damasus I's Council of Rome in 382, if the Decretum Gelasianum is correctly associated with it, issued a biblical canon identical to that mentioned above, [10] or if not the list is at least a sixth century compilation
I don't see what did I said wrong. By adding this you are supporting what I said regarding those who said the Biblical Cannon. That is why both Orthodox and Catholic Church they have 10 more books of the Old Testament, instead of the Protestants that they have rejected them.
