Great news! I was at the hospital yesterday and tested negative for the cytomegalovirus (CMV) but have had to go back to visiting the hospital twice a week instead of once to be monitored, just in case it rises again. This means my immune system is kicking in

I had bone marrow taken yesterday and await the results. On Thursday my Hickman line is to be taken out of my chest. This means needles will be inserted into my arms to take blood in future - but it also means I'm on the road to recovery

It's been a roller-coaster ride - still is at times - but I'm feeling like I'm getting stronger (trouble is, I tend to overdo things because I feel stronger than I actually am).

Blessings on ALL our sick ones.

    Love,

    Ian

Looking good Ian! Keep on keeping on!!

Here's hoping that the CMV stays under control. Is that virus a bit like MRSA - you never actually get rid of it but have positive/negative states depending on its activity?

    Hi Emo:

Is that virus a bit like MRSA - you never actually get rid of it but have positive/negative states depending on its activity?

CMV is found in approximately 75% of the UK population but an immunity has been built up so the virus just sits around in the body dormant and not dangerous at all. In my case, because of my immune system being destroyed through the treatments I had, plus my immune system being suppressed by strong drugs to allow for the stem cell transplant to take place, the CMV was able to break out. One major reason blood is taken twice a week is to be able to monitor exactly what is going on as one doesn't feel ill from CMV until it could be too late. Once the CMV is detected, known as 'positive', action has to be taken through the use of drugs in tablet form. If these don't work, which they didn't in my case the first time round, one has to be readmitted into hospital for about a week to receive more powerful drugs through a drip.

I am now negative again but I still have to be closely monitored because, as the drug that suppressed my immune system in order for the stem cell transplant to take hold is gradually reduced, my immune system will start to get stronger and come into its own. In other words, my immune sytem is going to be relied upon to fight the CMV on its own.
