Judge won't block 'Moment of Silence'

    Leslie,

I see this as an underhanded move by religionists. Call it what you want, a moment of silence, or Silent Reflection and Student Prayer, it's a way of reintroducing prayers into PUBLIC schools.

It's similar to the way religionists tried to first introduce Creationism as science in public schools, and were hindered. So they came back with the same idea in the guise of "Intelligent Design".

If believing parents want to conduct prayers and meditation in their own home with their children, that's where it should be. It shouldn't be a ritual at a tax-supported schools. Because of the ritualistic nature of such a silence, it borders on or accomplishes violating the "establishment" clause of the Constitution.

The problem is both the name of the act and the contents..

Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act

The word prayer in the name of the act should be a hugered flag...if it is not supposed to necessarily be a religious thing, then why cant the name of the law just be

Silent Reflection Time for Students and Faculty Act (forget the Prayer part)

Why? Because there are some who still want to try to slip prayer and/or religion into the public schools... student led prayers are still legal I believe (and that is why it is called Student Prayer Act)...but this Act surreptitiously allows prayers that are not "student led"... ...but mandated by the Illinois legislature and carried out by the public school officials...by combining it with the Silent Reflection part.... the law is unconstitutional...doesnt stop them from trying to get prayer back in school...

I have no issue with a brief time of reflection...kids are too damn hyper anyway...let em meditate for a minute before getting to the education that is supposed to happen....

    I don't think I get it.

Why is a mandatory 15 seconds of silence a problem at all?

And why is it neccessary to begin with?

I propose a mandatory 15 seconds of blue.

For fifteen seconds every morning in school, the teacher will hold up a blue canvas and all the students must stare at it.

Why? I dunno, but it makes about as much sense as fifteen seconds of silence.

I DEMAND that all our schools obey this practice. We can now begin the court hearings to legalize this.

    Agreed?

Lore, are you my evil twin?

BLUE is my favorite color. I totally agree that the world would be a better place, if only there were a law mandating 15 seconds of "crystal blue persuasion" every morning !!!

I saw an interview with one of the kids from that school

and he said it was no big deal......he said its just a time to think about whatever you wanted to......what you did last weekend, what you are going to do next weekend.

Remember, in some old movies, there was no dialouge(sp) no music.

What is wrong with mandated silence????

We can never move on as people want to not let go of the past.....What if there was no past history of prayer in school then would 15 secs of silence now be that big of a deal.

We have 5 mins to go from one clase to another, we have rules and regulations for everything. Why not a scheduled time to be quiet?

Why does there need to be a law, or a mandate?

Mandated silence is clearly related to old-fashioned school prayers. That's where the idea came from. School prayers have clearly been ruled unconstitutional here in America.

Look at the very title of this law. It's not even opaque, it's transparent what this stems from and who is behind it.

Doesn't Illinois have larger education issues to address than this? This is a lame attempt to feign interest in the students of that state. Maybe it was an attempt to win votes. Maybe if this were the 1970's, they'd be mandating 10 seconds of primal scream therapy?

I guess this is way over my head.

    I just dont get it.

On another note.......lets just say it is all religious. A sneaky way to let people pray.

Why does an athiest right to keep it out of the school win?

Why does an athiest right to keep it out of the school win?

In this case, to uphold the constitution. The atheist isn't trying to impose a belief system, just trying to prevent one from being imposed.

However, the judge refused to block the moment of silence. It apparently is going on, until further notice.
