avishai: Slander and gossip are considered serious sins. JWs can be disfellowship for slander and gossip; and some are. Many articles have been written about it. As far as the elder wife comment/fallacy... Lets try to stay on the topic. Please.

There was a 'young people ask' article this year or last year. Can't remember. But the article said homosexuality may or may not be genetic; no one knows for sure. Awake was not going to 'join the debate'.

Oh well at least they've moved on from the "Masturbation makes you gay" days and are now thinking about the genetic possibility.

An Ex dub mate of mine came out as being gay to an elder at his hall. The Elder looked at him rather sadly and said "Thats a shame you're like that Paul, the last brother to tell me something like that ended up killing himself." With a twisted religion like that instills a sense of guilt and shame about homosexuality from an early age and then that cuts people off from friends and family for being gay its no wonder people go off and kill themselves!

I am reminded of a brother in my old circuit in Utah. At the time I knew him he was in his 50's probably. He was a very feminine man, and it was common knowledge that he was gay. He was also married and had a son. The son had a heart defect and it caused his lips to be blue, due to poor circulation probably. Anyway, the son died in his early 20's. Now this brother and his wife are alone. I am only assuming, as he was gay, that he and his wife have a practical marriage. I feel bad that he did not have a chance to be true to himself and felt he needed to be married to hide it. I don't know where I am going with this. But we all know the attitudes towards gays in JWland. I guess I am saying this, I hope the tradeoff he decided on was worth it. There. Whew, that was hard. My brain isn't functioning well today, sorry!

Boy, i wish i knew how to quote... Feenex: I don't think the article said it's 50/50. ... here is another article *** w83 6/1 p. 25 Maintaining God’s View of Sex *** It is interesting that, according to dictionary definitions, homosexuality includes sexual DESIRE for others of one’s own sex. Yet the Bible makes a distinction between the practice of what is bad and sinful desires or tendencies. These desires may be present despite determined efforts to eradicate them from mind and body. Because of their earlier life environment, and perhaps other factors, we may have Christian brothers and sisters who from time to time have the urge for sexual relations with members of their own sex. But they fight that unnatural, Satan-inspired desire—and they do not give in to it. So they are not practicing homosexuals. They get control of their thinking, knowing that wrong desire that is allowed to grow fertile is bound to express itself in wrong acts.It is the practice of homosexuality that is condemned by the bible; not having homosexual tendencies. ***** (My comments) What makes a person gay? Is it the desire or the practice? For example, having a strong attraction for women doesn’t make you a fornicator; it’s the practice that makes you a fornicator. Also, I don't think anyone argues that genetics is the ONLY cause of homosexual desires. From what I understand; it's considered to be a combination of several factors which includes genetics (i could be wrong). I personally have never seen any negative attitudes towards brothers with gay "tendencies". Doesn’t mean they don’t exist. However, anyone who spreads rumors about a person's sexual orientation could be guilty of slander.

gopher: "The literature at that time sure said homosexuality could be unlearned." this could be said about secular literature as well; and TV, and movies, and school, and work... etc. Being gay was negative in every aspect of life.

Definition -- homosexuality is the orientation towards persons of the same sex. It doesn't have to involve actual sexual activity. The Bible talks about the activity as being condemned. People (including JW's) often look down on homosexuals (the people) and their "lifestyle" as much or more as what they do behind closed doors.

So if Jehovah was directing the literature, wouldn't He have known that homosexuality is mainly something people are born with? If so, shouldn't WTS literature have reflected the accurate viewpoint (as has been discovered by scientific research) rather than going along with popular trends?

The WTS is no more God-directed than the Philadelphia Orchestra. (Hint:Both are directed by men.)

devilsnok: The rate of gay suicide is 4 times higher than heterosexuals in the US. It's society as a whole that instills a sense of guilt and shame. Blaming JWs is a stretch; wouldn't you agree? Also, a person is disfellowshipped for not repenting. A gay person will be disfellowshipped for practicing homosexuality. Not for having homosexual desire. Just like someone will be jailed for stealing a car. They certainly wouldn't be jailed for wanting to steal it.

And I don't think anyone can argue that genetics is the ONLY cause of heterosexual desires; I mean you guys were just 'brought up that way'. But I can understand it I guess.

Just don't bring it around meh kids.

But just for sake of argument grassy, isn't in the bible that anyone who looks at another woman in such a way has comitted fornication in his heart? And I had to wonder, did you become 'straight' the moment you were intimate with a girl or do you consider it just a facet of yourself that was always there even before another person of the other sex was?
