My opinion is that the god problem is far more complex than any parallel you can make with a car manual. But also that he's a figment of the human imagination. He was invented so that we could be the first life forms to achieve immortality, because without him there can be no heaven, resurrection or reincarnation. People want to believe there is more to life than the straws they've drawn and what they can make of them if they make an effort. Believing in heaven is much easier than living well.

For years I considered myself an agnostic as I couldn't honestly decide on what to believe re: God. Not until I got outside the box of biblical limitation could I begin to see a pattern that underlies all the worlds religions. their origins, efflorescence and decline through divisionand disunity are very similiar enough so to suggest to the fair minded that a paradigm that unifies all of them as coming from the same source is worth considering. Otherwise I'd still be stuck with the dichotomy of chosing between no god or accepting the limited god of the bible, a false dichotomy to which I refuse to subscribe. So I'm now amongst the "believers" but with a much more inclusive and liberal understanding of what is "god". carmel

The manual for your belief in God lies in enjoyment. Enjoyment of learning in your own good time about different ideas about God that humans of the Earth have tried to work out for thousands of years. The enjoyment of not being rushed into who God is. Not having to do as the school bully tells you, but in having fun with a friend (invisible God) finding out about what all His people for thousands of years have tried to make of Him. And then seeing if you feel He is a friend for life or if you prefer to wait for the next life to get to know Him because He seems to have left you on your own in the play area of this one to have fun and do things you find interesting. If the manual becomes tedious maybe you should take a walk or a train or somethin . Do what feels calming and don't beat yourself up or else years from now you will end up in lifes hospital wishing you'd ignored the manual and done what you felt in your heart.

    Blue,

We are what we are , and the full experience of what we are is all I am putting forth , it has nothing extraordinary to offer, just clarity and understanding, knowing that we are already complete and need nothing other than a very simple understanding of our own true nature to free us from the delusions that cause our suffering in the face of the inevitable .

As to proof what do you mean exactly?

Are you numb to your own sense of what you are?

Do you have a presence of energy in your being?

The fact that you are capable of existing is all the proof I can offer, it is simple beyond belief and if one isn't ready to recieve what is always available then the suffering isn't over for that individual, and more must be experienced.

We are all the same inside , only our story is unique.

    Great post. I hear you.

there's absolutely no single reason to believe in god. those who do, don't do so because they "found god", but because they were indoctrinated that there is a god. same sh*t as JW, different colour. it dont matter to me though if they are happy with it and don't threaten other people with their version of hell or harmagedon. some people just can't live without an invisible friend.

Tangible, testable evidence that God exists

Are you numb to your own sense of what you are?

I don't believe humans are so special. In fact when considering the fact of how incredibly huge the universe is, chances are there are other intelligent species out there as well. Even if the chances are one in a trillion, there are trillions upon trillions of stars. If you're referring to how the earth seems to have been "made" for humans, I think that is the equivalent of saying that the human nose was designed perfectly for eyeglasses. Humans evolved because they fit the environment just enough to survive, not the other way around. Plus, there are many things about the earth that make it hostile to humans:

    • We can't live on more than 75% of it
    • We can't eat most of the food growing on it
    • There are countless poisonous and predatory animals
    • Many places vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanoes, tidal waves, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.
I think I have a perfectly good sense of what I am, I just don't have any delusions of grandeur about it
Do you have a presence of energy in your being?

There is lots of energy in my body. Bioelectric energy, kinetic energy, heat energy, tons of it! I have a feeling though you aren't referring to any of those but an unprovable mystical energy force not unlike "the Force" of the Star Wars films. Claiming the existence of this so-called mystical energy is walking on thin ice scientifically. Most people who make such claims can't say what kind of energy it is, or how to measure it, other than "feeling." One thing a rational mind always remembers is that feelings rarely lead to facts.

The fact that you are capable of existing is all the proof I can offer, it is simple beyond belief and if one isn't ready to recieve what is always available then the suffering isn't over for that individual, and more must be experienced.

The fact that I'm existing is no proof whatsoever. You present a cause (god) and an effect (existence) but provide no path between the two. One could substitute any cause (flying teapots or invisible flying spaghetti monsters) and present just as sound an argument as you have. These kinds of answers are why I don't believe. They're simply not good enough.

    I don't believe in God.

I used to. I would look out of my window, at a beautiful sunset or starry sky and marvel at the wonderful beauty and supreme awesomeness of God's creation. I'd wonder too, how it's possible for ANYONE to look at that and not believe. It was all so brilliantly clear.

It was reading and studying the bible that started me on the path to atheism. I started thinking the horribly sacrilegious thought that I actually don't like the God I'm reading about. I didn't see Power, Wisdom, Justice and Love, I saw Favouritism, Jealous, Egotistic and Unfair.

I agree with what Eclipse said -God is either dead, or indifferent, or worse - malevolent.

    Dear Soldiergirl,

I abslutely still believe in Jehovah and Jesus! They are the very ones who drew me out of the organization and have continually been a source of strength and comfort while exiting!!

I think so many misplace their anger and pain caused by the WT onto them and as a result feel they no longer believe. But I bet you that if they looked deep within, they would find a spark of faith left. At least that is my prayer.

    Sincerely,

I agree with you 100%, I too see that many equate Jehovah/God and Christ with the org and still havent got past that fact and will not admit that and this is what is causing the huge problem with believing in God and Christ, I too agree that Jah and Christ led me OUT of the org and I thank them, it took me 22 years of suffering but I could not have paid for a better lesson in life.

I am one of the ones that is agnostic/weak atheist not because of any bitterness due to the org,

but because of learning about the historical evidence that shows the bible is written by uninspired men,

as it is full of contradictions and errors. Reading the Bible without org blinders, destroyed my faith.

That is what made me go from believer to unbeliever.

I respect the beliefs of those who have had a spiritual experience.

I haven't....maybe I am not special enough, who knows?

But my logic tells me that either god does not exist, or he died, or he does not care or is unable to fix the world.

If I had the power to fix the world, why wait? wait for what? for more people to be born into misery? A god of love? where?????
