Yesterday afternoon I took my daughter to a beauty school to get her first perm. She has been wanting one for a while and I've been resistant until just recently after taking her to a school ice skating party and viewing her classmates...it was time to do this. I watched her sit in that chair the whole time, watching her go through the process, she enjoyed the whole thing. Afterwards we went to the store to get a few things she would need to maintain her new hairstyle. When we got home all of the boys (hubby included) looked at my daughter in wonderment, she looks so different now. Good lord she's turning into a teenager...she just turned ten.

The first pic is how she looked before, I'll download what she looks like now when she gets home.

She's very excited. She's wanted her hair this way since shortly after we moved here, I think it had something to do with having mostly white schoolmates and her wanting to fit in. Now she's in middle school and there are more black girls with her but most of them wear their hair straight and down (perms) so she wants to fit in with that aspect too.

I found the above words so full of love and affection MrsJones. I haven't got a daughter and it must be so nice to do those sort of girlie things. I will just have to wait until my grand daughter gets old enough!

I can't wait to see a photo of her with her new hair style.

Is ten young to get a perm??Could it damage her hair??How long would it take to grow out if she doesn't like it??Does she have to keep it doing it every so offten??

Could you explian the process for me because I got a perm when I was around that age and it made my strieght hair curly. When African American women talk about getting a perm I always wondered what's the diffrence between Caucasion hair perms and African Amreican hair perms. If you don't know thats cool.I'm just curoius I've never had the opertunity to watch someone get one other than myself and I love hair processes and I like to know what they are and how to do them.

I color my own hair and I can mix and buy my own color.I used to cut my own hair but that was when it was really short. And I've done my own highlights in my hair. It's kind of a hobby for me.

Your little girl is so cute BTW.You must be a really proud momma.

I wanted to wait until my daughter was thirteen but upon seeing her schoolmates and just being damn tired of doing it myself (the process of scratching out, washing, blow drying, pressing (not often), and braiding - I don't know how my mother did it with two girls) I gave in. I know of some black mothers getting their daughters' hair permed at five years, that's too young. It could damage her hair if I allow it to be processed too often (every two weeks or one a month), I'm only going allow her to get touch ups once every two or three months depending on the rate of her hair growth. If I go longer that that she could experience breakage. It could take a year to grow out but she would still need to go get it done to cut down on the amount of breakage.

We talked about what she needs to do to keep her hair up and I'll be monitoring and helping her since I'm an old pro at this.

Hey Mrs.Jones! Your daughter is beautiful! Getting her hair straightened is going to make her look much older and more mature. You better get you a stick to beat the boys from school off your front porch. LOL

I could use some advice about this. My daughter and I have tried putting an Optimum relaxer in her hair and it relaxed a little but she still can't get it smooth and straight. Her straightening iron works pretty well, but it's really a chore! She is bi-racial and her Dad had what you would call "good hair" Her hair has the fine texture of mine which would easily burn, but is very curly. It looks like mine did back when I kept my hair long and really curly. The woman who cuts my daughter's hair says we would have to be extremely careful about straightening, because her hair is so fine, so she's afraid to do it.

She wants that straight and sleek look. We live out in the boonies and to get to a black hair salon would be about an hour's drive. Then if we found someone who treated her hair like regular black hair, they could ruin her head.

Your hair looks great in your photo. Can't wait to see your daughter's "after" pic.

I'm sorry I forgot to explain that part. The perm I got for my daughter is actually a relaxer.

There's a pretty got explanation of the process here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relaxer

Seems like a really big commitment. When I got my hair permed i let it grow out but my hair waas never really the same.It used to be really streight before the first perm and as I got older it got curly. Now I blow it out everyday when I wash it to get the curl out.Or I use a flat iron but I'm kinda lazy to do that everyday.

BTW what is scratching out??Do you really have to scratch her hard??Does that hurt her??
