Here's a dollar for gas.....what a joke...

I heard the other day on the radio that gas (in the US) was up 81 cents/gal. from this time last year. I am sure the 2 at the beginning of the price of gas on the sign is about to be as extinct as the dodo bird. . We complain about $3/gal gas in the States, but when I was in Caymans, it was $4.20/gal. (I presume that is CI, not US..meaning it was $5/gal US)...its even higher for our JWDers in Europe.....where they are paying $7.25/gal.....70% of which is taxes....

The last time gas was at $1/gal was at the beginning of 2002.... sigh...

I was often stuck driving ALL DAY..with carload of 4 sisters (usually the ahem....ones who had widened out..ahem).....they would let me drive all day, while they insisted on going through McDonald's drive through for a combo meal......and yet they DID NOT GIVE ME A DAMN PENNY for driving (cause they spent their money at MickeyD's).... Back before May of 2002, I was driving a piece of crap Impala that got 15mpg on a good day...and used oil.... and I was working a PT gig...so I could "do more for Jehovah"....{gag}..so I was always broke....I cant imagine driving around in the field circus now...with gas at $3/gal and rising..even in my car that gets 30mpg now...

WHAT WAS THE REAL COST OF DRIVING..ESPECIALLY TO ALL OF US WHO WERE PIONEERS?...what was the cost in wear and tear, gas, more frequent oil changes, tire changes, tire rotations, other maintenance....driving all day....especially in the winter, because everyone wanted to "work from the car"...so you had to keep your car running for the heat.... (of course, I used that to my advantage..."someone had to stay with the car...so you go ahead and get that door"....or in the summer, they wanted to work the rurals because it was so hot and they wanted to stay in the A/C taking turns getting out...usually in both cases only 1 person would get out at a time, and 4 (or 6 if it was a van) would sit in the vehicle....

just wondering what your experiences were (or are if you are still "in")....a trip down memory nightmare lane....

...oh......and HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE.....PLEASE BE SAFE....

I hated field service, but thought I was the only one who hated it. I, literally, used to pray to Jehovah that nobody would be home as I was knocking on the doors. Talk about guilt!

When I pioneered, I offered to drive many days....silly me.

Of course, I considered it a wonderful privilege to drive my vehicle to the ground because of magazine selling field service. The pioneers absolutely loved working rurals, and in fact, that's what they only worked during the weekdays. I sometimes found myself filling up the gas tank every couple of days, and I hate to mention the other problems that just driving out in many of the rural areas had caused on the vehicle I drove then. I'll also mention to that some of them just so conveniently "forgot" to offer anything and would just hop out of the car when we arrived back at the Hall.

Oh well, I was the one that volunteered to do it lol. I'm just glad I can use my the fuel now for other worthwhile activities.

Gas prices are the pits no matter where you live, and yeah having people always want to ride with you and never giving a cent for gas got old real fast. Some of them even wanted you to give them a ride to their residence because they had caught a ride with someone else to get to the hall for the sales meeting prior to the door to door selling and had no way to get home. Sooo when asked by the elder leading the meeting for field selling, if its okay for sister and brother (not married mind you) to ride with me I said no, They don't donate for gas and I am not going to be their personal taxi. Well you could have heard a pin drop in a deep carpet it got so quiet. I didn't give a shit if they were embarassed or not. The elder tried to counsel me later and I told him its my vehicle and I will say who or who doesn't ride with me. I will work with them in the ministry (selling) but I am not going to be their transportation, and if someone doesn't like it, its too bad. He said I had a bad attitude, I then pointed out that he never seems to take them with him and his wife in the ministry and that has been a seven month observation. He just said never mind.

When I pioneeredâ„¢ people assumed I'd be the one driving them all around the entire day. I'd consider myself lucky if someone gave me a dollar, most never did. On top of getting a free ride they would bitch because my station wagon didn't have air conditioning, had window cleaning equipment in the back and a ladder on top.

It seems like the cheapest, most worthless people on earth are usually the first ones to whine when their free ride isn't luxurious enough.

Was anyone here actually successful in creating converts, or was it just a humiliating waste of time?

worldtraveller, It was one big waste of time for me. I never "helped anyone come into the Truth", and I hardly found anyone that was remotely interested. I could've finished college in all that time that was spent working for the Borg. Of course, I always thought, as we were taught, that even if no interest was found that I was successful. R.F.

Unfortuantely, I brought 4 people in back in the 80's. I hope they forgive me.
