The last time gas was at $1/gal was at the beginning of 2002.... sigh...
When I was a teenager, and had my first car, gas was 15 cents a gallon !!!!!!
This was in 1960.

Some pioneers I knew would buck the system and have a vehicle that wasn't exactly "theocratic". 2-seater pickup, tiny 2-door, etc. If there were NO other vehicles available, the pioneer would drive. Otherwise, nobody wanted to ride in the pioneer's rig.
Pretty smart if you ask me. I was a sucker though. Got a nice theocratic 4-door while pioneering and had plenty of people mooch.
Now if I ever start pioneering again.......

It seems like the cheapest, most worthless people on earth are usually the first ones to whine when their free ride isn't luxurious enough.
My favorite was when the elders and their wives would make their grand appearance for the CO visit. All the men would work together and the poor elderesses couldn't drive their husbands vehicles. So I would get a car full of spoiled, whiney old women in my shabby little car. Then it would start, "this back seat is not very big." "Is your car supposed to make that noise." "I'm getting a headache." "I think you have an exhaust leak." "I think something else is wrong with your car."

"Grand appearance" is right. Normally you never saw them in serviceā¢, but they could be often be found in the donut shops.
All the men would work together
That way they wouldn't have to get out of the car too often. They'd spend their time gossiping about the brothersā¢.
"I think you have an exhaust leak."
That's the perfect time to fart and say, "Yup!"

Heh...I have a 2-door sedan. One time I had to squeeze two other sisters in the back (one of whom is now df'd). I told them they wouldn't like riding with me because of the lack of two other doors, but they didn't listen.
Now I just take one person in the car with me if I have to be dragged out into field circus. Word spreads fast when your hoopty doesn't have the comforts of life.

I always gave money for gas for service (this was even before I was old enough to drive), it's just good manners that my parents instilled in me.
Some of the best memories I have of service were in the "junker" cars! lol We lived near bethel, in a mainly rural area, lots of long farm drives that would drift over in the winter. I'd be out with some brother that was here doing construction at bethel, alot of them came from out west, and had no experience driving in the snow. When I'd say maybe we shouldn't drive up that lane, they'd say "nah, I'll just gun it, we'll get through it". This is in a car with almost bald tires and holes in the floorboards, and while he's ramming the snow drifts you'd get a face full of snow! lol We were lucky most times, but many times we had to get out and push the car. Good times, good times!

By the time I started driving in 68, It had doubled to 30cents a gallon.
Your doctor would come out to your house at 3 am to treat an earache for 25$.
Anyone, doctors, who made 10,000$ a year was considered rich.
