  There are cultural and genarational issues beyond JWism . Most children were spanked (not punched or whipped) a short while ago and none of them were nannified like nowadays. I saw a guy trying to sue a neighbor because they 'hurt his feelings' by calling him a name. geesh.

  I have never spanked my children but this is down to each parent to make the decision and at the moment its not against the law so they are doing nothing wrong. Yet you get a self rightous exjw who think they are far better parents simply because they havent spanked a child. duh.

  I was born of southern parents and my father was a career military man. I was whipped a lot with belts, switches and occasionally slapped in the face. I grew up hating my father and couldn’t wait for the day when I would be big enough to kick his ass (and this I did at the age of 17). Eventually I matured to the point where I forgave my father for the excessively harsh whippings I received understanding that his life’s experiences had made him a frustrated and angry person. I don’t oppose corporal punishment when it is meted out properly.

  Of course I carried forth the practice of hard angry whippings when I became a father and feel great regret and sorrow for the pain I caused my children. I feel fortunate that my (JW) children have forgiven me and while they spank their children have not done so excessively and have for the most part used other forms of discipline.

  I know of some very rare JW that did not believe in spanking but like I said it was rare. I think there are more effective ways to discipline a kid without having to hurt them. I don't think it's effective when you are trying to teach your child to trust you and in the same time you hurt them. All that does is make them scared of you so if they obey it's mostly out of fear and not because they understand that what they are doing is wrong.

  I think a lot of JW believe in spanking, my dad would quote the bible when he beat the crap out of me he once whip me with a garden hose . I have forgiving my parents, I know they did not know any better but I do now so I will never use pain to teach.

  Not being a parent, I will not pass comment on this subject, I will only post up this quote - to show that the WTS has no qualms about endorsing bizarre punishments. It horrified me at the time that I read it

  I recall a form of punishment that worked effectively on Horacio, my fifth son, when the literal rod failed to do so. He was about eight years old. He was too insistent in associating with undesirable neighborhood boys. So I had him dressed in one of his sister’s dresses. Not daring to be seen with that on, he stayed in the house and off the street.

  JW's are most certainly in favor of corporal punishment, to the point that it seems to be the default position on how to raise children. This is also true in a lot of other times and places. What bothers me about the JW attitude is that no one is looking for or counseling on better ways to raise children. And then they wonder why the all leave at 18.

  Smacking is the 'thin end of the wedge'!

  If you would HIT your child it is not past you to do anything else to them.

  Let's not forget that the past generations that permitted and even encourage smacking of children have caused numerous wars including world wars.....and they say the world was a better place in the past! My arse it was!

  My mother complains that 'the nuns used to beat me!!!!' and then out of the other side of her mouth she says 'bring back the cane for naughty children! It never did me any harm!'

  When I say, but your parents who hit you, and the nuns who hit you, were of the generation that decimated the planet during world war 2, so it taught everyone that violence is the way forward, she has little more to say!

  Let's say, Sweden has not been to war with any country for a long, long time and smacking is outlawed there!

  Tapping a childs hand away from touching a fire is NOT violence, but protection.....so let's not forget what smacking is.....a punishment! It is punishment that is delivered in anger or frustration that needs to be banned!
