My minimum tip is 20% for good service. I recently gave a 10 cent tip to someone who was just plain rude

Always 20%. Even mediocre service. Why? I don't know. When I am with someone who is the host and they don't tip enough it makes me want to crawl out of the place. I have even snuck back to add to the tip.
BUT One occasion stands out. On our youngest daughters 17th birthday I made reservations at The Heathman Hotel in downtown Portland. Very $$$ place. I told them the occasion and asked for a small birthday cake to be brought out as a surprise. When we arrived I went to the desk and reminded the Maitre D. "Oh, yes sir, all set"
We had a particularly unctuous waiter who was obviously working on his tip. At the end of the meal he brought the bill and I looked at him like "have you forgotten anything?" No response. Dinner was about $150.00 for the three of us. I added $5.00 on the credit card and we started to leave. The waiter caught up to me just as we walked pass the desk and he wasobviously pissed off. "Was there a problem, Sir?" I pointed to the Maitre D and said "Ask him" The Maitre D slapped his forehead and said "Oh, my God!" Too late.

There might be 7 of us dinning. The tip could run >$100. If like 2 or 3 of us go to Morton's The tab would run >$300 so a corisponding tip would be 60+. At Sonic tip is the excess change be it 25 cents or 99 cents.
