What's the nasty habit?
I would really love to stick around and post but that parrot just let on that he knows more than two phrases.
He just said, "Get your bookbag"
I didn't know what to think until I realised it is 1:15 P.M. Sunday.
I bet that my friend who is a former JW and his pioneer sister wife had a schedule and the parrot 'encouraged' them in Field Service.
Oh boy, I bet the Watchtower's Service Desk would lend him out to the local congregations on Sunday when they are closed so he could 'encourage' them in Field Service, too.
Well, gotta run.
He's crawling all up and down his cage and yelling, "Get your bookbag."
And if you threat to kill the bird it shouts: "No blood, no blood." ;-)
You could set the bird outside with a sign board that reads "Religion is a trap and a snare"
I actually have an African Grey...he had some bad habits too because he was in a pet store for two years getting mistreated. I've had him for over 4 years now and he's much calmer. He use to bite to draw blood and he use to scream.
You need to try not to "react" when he does the things you can not tolerate. When he does good things, praise him with gentle words.
Is he in a quiet space? If he's in the living room, it may be too much stimulation for him at the moment. My parrot has his own room (walk-in closet)...when it's around 7pm I put him in his cage and cover it up as well. I live in an apartment and he's not been a problem but that's because I've worked with him for several years. I bring him out of his "room" to be with use during the daytime but they also need to be in a quiet space when they try to sleep. Parrots need to have about 10-15 hours of sleep especially during the winter. If they do not get the proper rest, they will act like misbehaving children. They also need LOTS of toys because they are very smart birds and can get bored very easily. I also allow my bird to rip paper up, my bird can do that for quite a while and is very content.
African Greys and even Timneh Greys (which are a bit smaller and have a maroon tail) can be very good birds.
The best thing I can tell you is learn ALL you can about these birds. Once you understand their behavior and their body language, you'll be able to handle him and he may end up being a beloved pet for years on.
Good luck to ya.
One more thing, you CAN retrain him not to say those things by getting him to say things you desire. It will take time and patience. You've got to remember, it didn't take the bird overnight to start saying these phrases, so it's not going to be overnight getting him to not say them. My bird use to say "Paco"...because I use to take in birds for a bird rescue place to retrain them for a permanent home. He's not saying a"Paco" anymore because I'll say "good birdie, I love you Kitto (my grey's name) or "pretty Kitto". He now say's those phrases and I haven't heard him scream "Paco" for a good while. He doesn't hear it anymore.
Please, if you can, be patient with him. He can be an awesome bird for ya.
Honesty, Do you really see the birds beak move? Could it beeeeeee Jehovah?
With my first cockatiel, I've only had 2, I bought a cassette tape, (It might have been an 8 track) I don't remember where, that would play and repeat. I would turn it on, as I went to work.
When we got a female puppy, to join our old female dog, the puppy was out of control. Jump, Jump, Jump. When we them together, It only took 1 low gruff growl, and that little puppy, stopped dead in her tracks, and laid down. LOL
Then I saw the dog whisper not long ago, and he said that when your dog, is doing something wrong, you should make a loud sharp 1 syllable, noise. So I tried it on my bird. It works.
So maybe, when it says something you don't like, make a noise. Try teaching it "Hello Baby" "Hi sweetie" "Good Girl" or something similar. When it says it, get a special parrot treat. They pick things up very fast. It took less that a week, of when I passed her cage, saying "Hi sweetie" that she now beats me to it!! LOL
An African Grey? Those are the sweetest birds going. Please, be nice to him. They are sensitive to their owners emotions and like to be in the center of things. Don't relegate him to a back room and its best to put them in front of window to watch the world go by. Always let him out of his cage when you are home. They love to eat what when you cook, give him any fresh veggies as a treat, especialy green or red peppers and seeds, fresh fruit, etc., in addition to his diet.
Don't cook with aluminum pans with a bird in the house, the fumes are toxic.
African Grey's can learn up to 5000 words.....start talking to him! I had one and miss that bird like he was a child.
He just needs to hear new words and he'll stop repeating the old stuff.
Mine use to say the following:
"Hey, come here!" "Give me a Kiss!" "Here, Kitty, Kitty"....the cat would come and then get a nice nip!
"I love you"....."OH SH*T!" ....."What the Hell?".....He would repeat his name, sounds such as squeaking doors, the cat meowing, etc., etc. They know what to say and when to say it. It has been discovered they have the intelligence of a 5 year old.
Please, if you need any more help let me know!
Best regards,
r.
