I got them for my trip to Australia (in the hopes that it would protect me against snake bite in the bush), but they gave me a horrid blister after a week, didn't break in well at all.

A good western boot should be a little tight across the arch and slip in the heel when new. Like any shoe, try a lot on, as all makers have their idea of what the right sized last in so fit varies.. Tony Lama, for example, runs narrow for a lot of folks.

Break in? Just wear 'em. Many creams and oils have silicon bases and silicon destroys leather in the long term. I break in boots ( and felt hats) by getting them good and wet and wearing them dry..at least the work class stuff.

As far as hurting the back... I've been in western boots full time most of my life. The extreme heeled boots with pegged shanks are for horseriding and are a little hard on the back. Most of what is availabe to most of us (retail) is on pretty moderate lasts and makes a good boot for walking and general wear. Ariat in particular, and a few other bootmakers build boots on a sports last with polymer insoles that are real easy on the feet and back.

I like Nocona off the shelf, too. Next time i have and extra $300 I think I will have a pair of work boots made out of shark.... sharkskin boots last forever

I have a bootmaker close in Guthrie OK... and he's very reasonable with good work.

What is the definition of a cowboy? Someone who dresses like one or someone that actually raises cattle?

I know how to use OB chains, fix a prolapsed uterus and have warmed up new calfs in the truck cab and on the kitchen floor. Does that count?

    I like Garybus's way.....

The best way to break in boots I found was to first buy soft leather boots. Never cow hide. My favorites is water buffalo. Never buy off the rack, always have boots custom made. Nocona are my favorite. Put the boots on, soak feet in boots in a tub of hot water until they squish when you walk. Then wear them until they are dry. Don't do much walking. This is best done on a warm summer day. After soaking boots, get on a large motorcycle and ride 350 miles. Sioux Falls to Rapid City in August is ideal.

Now wash boots with saddle soap, spray boots with leather relaxer, and ride back home.

think I'll buy me a pair just to break them in...

I have never owned a pair of Cowboy boots in my life, but funny thing my wife was looking at some for me, I think for Christmas, I told her I'd rather get a new socket set.
