Yes I know the Indians had thier trible prejudice against other tribes, some the fault of the chiefs motivated by wrong attitudes, but these wars were never in the likes of the European and middle Eastern wars,,, the wars the Indian had did served a purpose sometimes to get land to live on, hunting spots, some by the plots over eager chiefs, some just nesacarry.

The point to remember here is that we are all of us evovling,, Indians included, and I think we should be honest about our past to better our future. I think more and more clearly people are seeing thru the phoney exteriour of Government propaganda and not falling for the same old lines. As more people evovle with clearer understanding of this behemoth of ignorance the powers that be the better chance this world has of not using old ways that clear thinking acknowldges doesn't work and be flexible with new and creative ways, but IMO the Indian had a far better life and their great respect for the land and all creatures is something I aspire to.

You seem to confuse evolution with betterment, this is not the case. Cultures do not "advance" and become better, they simply adapt.

I'm Mohawk, I've studied my culture and my history and some of it isn't pretty. To hear you spout ethnocentric platitudes about the motivations for war is insulting. There was brutality from every side, race has NOTHING to do with it. Elevating one culture over another is just as bad as debasing one, in that it creates harmful lines of thinking used to justify terrible actions.

War is something all humans are capable of.

As for the Lakota situation, I'm curious to see how it plays out but unless they create their own self-sustaining economy I don't know how it could succeed.

Just exactly my thought too. Maybe they have big casinos.

I am 1/8 Montauk but didn't know it until about 12 years ago. I do feel for them, but the Native Americans in this area are trying to get rights that seem ridiculous. They want to be able to hunt whales. Why???? They were given a permit a few years ago and killed one whale, with speed boats and machine guns. Mighty hunters, right? If they want the rights of their ancestors, they should be required to hunt the same way they did. Then they had a giant mammal to dispose of. I think it's just bizarre that they feel the need to do that. Those are the Makah Indians on the Pacific Coast.

Closer to home, we have the Tulalip, Muckleshoot and Swinomish tribes who do have the best and biggest casinos. They get preference for any jobs at the casinos, and each tribe member gets a percentage of the haul. I think that's great. Driving there, through the reservation (Tulalip) we see broken down mobile homes that should be torched, but people live there. There's one large house that's been covered by a huge blue tarp for years. The whole house looks like it's going to collapse, but you can tell that there are probably 5 or 6 who live in the house. But the schools are being rebuilt and most of the houses are very nice and well kept.

being born into a family with native american members, i applaud the spirit of the words that the Lakota have put forth, but, unless they can eradicate the corruptness within their own membership, it will mean nothing, just as the US constitution means nothing. My mom and I were discussing this topic this morning. She told me that there are 28 states in the USA that want to secede from the Union. She said that she never expected to see the day when America has become what it has..........we've lost so many of our rights, and haven't been a Democracy for many years. We just think we are. Time to wake up and smell the coffee, and, as I've BEEN saying all along it's going to take a grassroots movement to bring back freedom and peace to our country, and then, the world. Maybe it can happen, maybe not, it's all up to each one of us.

common mistake...............we are not a Democracy............The U.S.A. is a Democratic Republic. Mainly a Republic. Big difference.

I think Democracy is the goal, but I don't think it's ever been that.

I wonder what good can come of this. I think the Lakotas are making a mistake they will regret.

I think the US will see this as a threat to Homeland security; large parcels of land governed by an entity whose interests may not align with US interests, a possible safe haven for all manner of anti-US operations.

The claimed territories are completely land-locked. How many airports do the Lakotas claim, and how many Lakota airlines are there? What if the US government told US freight and common carriers, "You don't go there anymore."

There are some casinos - relatively small ones because of the small population. They can develop their natural resources: minerals and alternative energy and sugar beets have been mentioned.

I think their biggest challenge, if they are allowed to get to "square 2," is economic. Is "no taxes" a good idea? Are all their politicians and political aides working pro bono?

Go read their Lakota Freedom website.

I don't see any good at all coming from this. First of all, they are laying claim to the lands in 5 states including the Black Hills territory. They are either putting liens on the property that people have there now or threatening to. They insist that the land was trampelled on by the 'whites' without regard. One question - what makes that any different than land expropriation that happens all the time in this country to small landowners and farmers alike? George Bush expropriated acres of farmland in Texas to build his stadium - he needed a parking lot - sure he offered the people money but they didn't want that. They were forced off. What about all those people with the small mobile homes on the waterfront in Florida that were tossed out on the butts so that the town could build luxury condo's? The government has taken the land from it's people by force at any time they want - regardless of their culture or colour. Many in the US fled to Canada during the early wars and had all their property taken by the government then - no compensation. What about the Cherokee? Other tribes? What about the indentured servants from England that died at the hands of their owners, or were ripped off of their land agreements and whose families suffered and most likely continue to suffer today? In times of war, land is the conquest. The same can be said wether Indian or European - war for land, war for profit (slaves were profitable in both cultures) and war for governance. The Lakota have 1 billion dollars that was awarded to them many years ago and they have refused it. What is the answer?

Just remember - a country sets its own currency and therefore, if they set out on this path, nobody living inside those areas would be able to use the American dollar. The Mexican's are saying that they are taking Texas and California back and the government has done nothing - the Lakota say they are taking 5 State area's back and the government will do nothing. If you think that the one vision Euroamerica is just talk - think again. Divide and conquer. In the end it won't matter - civil unrest will unravel the whole country and martial law will be declared. The whole country will become one and their will be no valid constitution, no land agreements - nothing. We will be run by corporate agreements globally as one unit without regard to culture or past grievances.

Who here can fill me in on the history of the "Five Nation Confederacy?" Question, how did Indians become citizens? Did they have to raise their right hand and pledge allegiance to the US flag ?
