This has to be the "cheekiest" thread ever on JWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One never asks someone about their finances!

    Changeling,

I thought the same thing when I saw this thread.

I don't understand why anyone would think it's cheeky. I think the handling of one's finances should be taught as early as grade school and continued from there. Think of all those college students preyed upon by the credit card companies. My husband and I just finished a Dave Ramsey course about getting out of debt and learning how to budget, save, and handle our money. Parts of the course wasn't comfortable, like having to talk about pass money mistakes, but we think it was eye opening and benificial for our financial welfare.

What would really be cheeky is discussing one's salary with your co-workers. Not a bright thing to do.

    I agree Mrs Jones.

Traditionally, it has been bad manners to talk about money. But why should it be? My parents taught me nothing about how to handle money. I have been discussing managing money honestly with my son since he was little in the hopes that he will have a much better understanding of how to avoid the pitfalls of credit cards and manage his finances prudently.

People talk about oral sex and masturbation on this forum which really is a private matter, yet talking about money is taboo?

I also noticed Mrs. Jones was one of the few people on this thread who doesn't carry a big credit card balance.

Restrangled - how are you earning 25-30 percent on retirement funds? While I have had years I've made more than that in no way can I guarantee that I will make 30% on my retirement funds. Please enlighten us on your investing secret. Cheers, Gravey

We have our accounts with American Funds. I am not good with numbers so I may be off on the %. My husband's account has doubled in value in 4 years. Most is invested in Euro Pacific Growth Fund - A. I chose to invest in lower risk items so my account is earning about 8 to 10%, (I think) r.

Yes Every month and i know before the end the month what they are going to be by running a programme called Quicken, This does the calculations for you as you input your transactions .

I have been £20000 - $40000 overdrawn but at the time there was no option. That was a little scary..

And yes we do discuss very personal things here, quite rightly, openly, so why not money.?

I discuss money with my children and my oldest has just Graduated with a degree and no debt, so it is important.

Like I play my sports, I stay ahead of the game. Once you relax and let your guard down, the opponet takes over. I never let my credit card get the best of me. I use it for emergency purposes.

I can never understand why someone would want to use cash.

    That is so last century.

    Cards rule.

Just watch your various balances online every few days and you'll be fine.

Oh, and always earn more than you spend.

I like purchasing with cash because the moment I buy it it's mine, not on loan from the credit card company or the store's credit department until I pay it off and not subject to repossession and credit difficulties. It's especially satisfying when making a big purchase like furniture or a big appliance - which is what we did when we bought our house (yep we have a mortgage) and had to buy a washer and dryer and a frig with cash.
