Why did jesus say not to touch him after the resurrection?

It can't be due to uncleanliness as the law ended when he died. So why does he say:

    John 20:17

Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

    That a misinterpretation.
What he actually said was "You Can't touch this" and then Hammer Danced across the room.

for a serious question, that sure was a cute response. Thanks now I have the hammer you can't touch this dance in my mind.

    On the serious note:

Perhaps he said not to touch him because he was clean of sin and the filth of earth that he wanted to be pure for when he arrived in heaven.

Yet Jesus invited Thomas to touch his wounds. Maybe this prohibition only applied to women.

Karen Armstrong discusses this passage, and points out that the more colloquial translation (lets face it she was hugging him)

"you don't need to grab hold of me - I've not even left."

The other idiomatic expression misjudged as harsh was at the wedding in Cana: "what have I to do with you, woman?"

In english he would just say "stop telling me what to do, Mother."

Maybe because touching him would have covered them with ectoplasm.

"I ain't afraid of no ghost!"

It has nothing to do uncleanness or gender. It is more Johannine symbolism. Compare Matthew 28:9, where Mary and the women grab Jesus' feet and clasp it. But in John, Jesus tells Mary not to do this (the verb is "hold" not "touch") because he is already ascending to his Father -- he is already on his way. The Johannine passion narrative does not view the event as discrete episodes of burial, resurrection, appearances, then ascension. It is all one thing -- Jesus ascends from the grave to his Father. That is why Jesus tells Mary to tell the disciples that he is ascending to the Father, not that he is risen. So by holding him in place, Mary would halt his motion that concludes with his ascension to heaven.
