"I've been blessed"

To me this is one the most nauseating sayings. I hear it all the time.

How are you? "I'm sooo blessed, I got over that awful cold I had last week".

How are your kids? "They are the greatest kids ever, I'm soooo blessed".

How's your job? "Oh, that terrible boss I was telling you about quit and the new one is a dear, I'm sooo blessed".

Well good grief, what did you do to merit all this blessing? And what about the guy over there with terminal cancer, or your neighbor with the crack head kids, or all the people living in barely human conditions all around the planet, where are there blessings??????

I realize that when people say: "I've been blessed", they are giving credit to their god for their good fortune. But honestly, isn't it just a little bit pretentious to say that god chose you to shine his blessings upon, when some many others are suffering?

Personally, I've had good things and bad things happen to me. Some of these I've generated or brought on myself. Others have been caused by outside factors. Some were just "serendipity". I don't believe for a moment that unseen forces are manuvering things in my life, and I don't think they are doing so for any one else.

    Forgive me the rant,

    Have a blessed day,

Changeling- A very good thread my blessed sister ! LOL! My wife and I agree with you. We were just talking about it . Many times we make or inhibit any success we attain, I'll call it that instead of the B word. It reminds me of some words from a Sting song I remember that apply to this thread - the song is " the Book of My Life".

There are tales of good fortune that couldn't be planned

    There's a chapter on God which I don't understand

There's a promise of heaven and hell but I'm damned if I see

    Though the pages are numbered

I can't see where they lead

For the end is a mystery no one can read

In the book of my life

Anyway, you get the picture . These people are like you and me- they can't predict what will happen , things can happen randomly as well, and we can effect change as well. No superpowers controlling things or events

I think that is the most misused phrase they have at the Grand Boasting Session experiences. I begin to ask what is the context in which this phrase is used. Does the person who feels blessed actually benefit from the "blessing"? Possibly so, if good health or financial freedom is the outcome or the person finds a good spouse. But, credit should not (I repeat: Credit should NOT) go to Jehovah under any circumstances. More often than not, the person worked toward the "blessing" and should properly take credit. Other times, other people (or even Satan the Devil) help those people to get those "blessings". Still other times, it is dumb luck. And Jehovah gets the credit for it.

More common is the "I feel blessed" followed by some stupid assignment or "privilege(??)". They feel blessed that they were able to quit a job or drop out of college or the military so they could pioneer, join some crap "school(??)", go to Beth Hell, or become hounders. Folks, this is NOT a blessing! This is just being used to "bless" others without yourself receiving anything worthwhile whatsoever. Very often, the people you are being used to "bless(??)" are not going to benefit from it. You have become a value destroyer.

I challenge Jehovah to bless me in a REAL way. What I mean by blessings in NOT getting stuck in that fxxxing Ministerial Training School, pioneering, donating any money to the Worldwide Pedophile Defense Fund, being dragged back to the Kingdumb Hell or out in field circus, having additional downlines to destroy even more value for me, or any of those so-called "privileges" that the witlesses make such a big deal about. That is a MALEDICTION! What I mean by blessings is (1) Undoing all that Jehovah has done to ruin my prospect at attracting the opposite sex (and I do mean ALL), (2) setting me up for a super-high income job that creates value along my greatest strengths, and (3) not taking all the damn credit for it. No, I will never ever walk into a Kingdumb Hell again. Instead, the value needs to come from actual, tangible products or services that did not exist before. Plus, it has to be noticed by the opposite sex and PROPERLY acknowledged.

And, no visits by Brother Hounder. I have absolutely no use for those specious arguments, non sequiturs, and twisted definitions of words that they regularly employ. That organization is not the source of anything but hardship and malediction.

I agree that the expression "I've been blessed" is probably used inappropriately and too often. I also think that some people use it when they are truly greatful for escaping a potential fatal experience or surviving a serious illness. Whether this is presumptious or not, I don't believe it is intended to offend those less fortunate but because they genuinely have a faith in a Higher Power. Many people need to believe there is something/someone who cares and is watching over them.

This used to bug me too. When something good would happen, it was a blessing from Jehovah. People would pray for blessings from Jehovah (like drive home safe). So all positive things were from Jehovah, and not just thanking Jehovah (which is nothing wrong with that) but actually attributing the action as controlled directly by Jehovah. Then if something bad happens, it's "time and unforseen occurances". What a catch-all, never made sense.

My previous comment being said, this is not unique to the Witnesses. I think most religions are this way, and attribute too much to God, thinking he is controlling every day aspects of life.

I'm still trying to figure out what a blessin' is. IMO there's no such thing, or maybe I'm wrong, perhaps people do get petted in the ass by divine providence.

Just as annoying is when I am told to "Have a blessed day". I hear it on answering machine messages, in the grocery store, at the doctor's office. Ugh. First, what makes you so high and mightily connected with some invisible higher power that you have authority to confer blessings on me, and second, what makes you think I subscribe to any kind of religious affiliation.

Part of the problem with this saying is the passive tense. A more direct construction would be "****** blessed me". You just have to fill in the *******, and you have a better sentence.

And some people who are more blatant about their belief system do say "God has blessed me with xxxxxxx."

However, if they have the Christian God, only one-third of the world's population worships that God. And the Bible says all other gods are false.

So to what should the other two-thirds of humanity than attribute their good fortune, serendipity or blessings? Who can they rightfully thank when they get over the bad cold or have good kids?
