This is a funny/sad thread. Looks like the shunning is at the top. I wish every WT property in the USA would have WE-SHUN-CHILDREN spray painted all over them when I wake up in the morning.................................................oompa

I don´t think I would have any problem with the witnesses if it weren´´t for the shunning.

I mean, they have a set of beliefs like all religions, they think only they can attain salvation. Like most religions. But if it weren´t for the shunning they would just be another extreme fundie type religion. I can deal with that.

Well my brother and I are being quasi-shunned, but I have accepted that and it doesnt bother me as much now as the thought of it back when I was a kid.

I would like my Dad to be out of that religion, if anything so there is one less person teaching lies (destructive lies at that) to other people, especially school age children.

It just bothers me to no end knowing that the young people in his congregation are being taught by him not to pursue college or get a decent career--- and the circle repeats itself.

But yes, the shunning is the glue that keeps this cult together.

I am w/ you all the way, dawg. My JW family couldn't be happier and I am happy for them. I don't care what they believe. I just wish my sister would talk to me.

I agree. The shunning is a lot more of the Witness lifestyle than most people, including Witnesses, realize. The shunning includes not only DF'd or DA'd ones, but anyone not in the faith. You cannot speak to friends or family who are DF or DA. You cannot have a beer with a workmate. You cannot go to a work party or function. You cannot have 'worldly' friends or go to a 'worldly' party.

In addition, this shunning leads to the view that Witnesses are better than everyone else, and that any non-Witness is dead in Jehovah's eyes. Because they are shunned, and Witnesses are no part of it, it is easy to exaggerate reality. They can think that all worldly people are so bad, swear, smoke, do drugs, etc, because they cannot compare.

Shunning does affect a lot of the Witnesses.

Would you really care if your famlies stayed in the truth as long as they didn't treat you differently becasue you know better?

Dawg, I was DF'd many years ago, 1776/77 can't even remember. My mom did not start shunning me until 1997 or so. There was a brief period where she "fell away" in the early 1990's. I was so concerned about her during this time because I had no idea what she would do with her time. She did fine. She took a few college classes, traveled and stuff. But, she went back explaining the reason she left was so she could die with her children in Armageddon. Then she quoted a scripture about how loving your children more than Christ is wrong and went back to the KH and got re-instated. She started to get more and more distant until one day I got a letter in the mail. "There is a line drawn in the sand....blah, blah, blah....)

I did not care that she went back. It is what she wanted to do. If she did not start shunning it wouldn't make one bit of difference to me what she believed. As much as I hate the shunning policy ironically, it is because of the shunning that I found out the truth about the WT$. I went looking for answers when the shunning started and realized that the beliefs I was raised on and still held were all based on lies.

I agree totally with you dawg. Anyone can believe whatever they want - it has no effect on me. But when they say I can't talk to my friends in family - just because I've "returned to the world". Then that's just wrong! They don't shun people IN the world. Why shun people who have returned to it?

I would be OK if they had a punishment that banned people from meetings. Fine - don't let me in the KH if you think I'll cause trouble. But shunning in personal life is just not christian.

I could deal with it if they would talk to me AND respect my beliefs. There are plenty of people who will share with you what they believe and can have a discussion about why. I wish the JWs could do the same.
