for it is better to marry

Scripturally, marry = sexual intercourse. It's why the sexual act should not be taken lightly. I don't see how it could be any clearer.

BA, I agree with you, that back then it might have been that way.

Should it be the same today, biblically speaking?

Ok guys, check THIS out... As the NAS bible translates it starts to sound creepy:

But if any man thinks that he is acting unbecomingly toward his virgin daughter, if she is past her youth, and if it must be so, let him do what he wishes, he does not sin; let her marry.

    say what??

I have no idea what the "thinks he is acting improperly" part is. But if she is still a virgin, I'd say they haven't had sex yet.

    Help me out here.

I would say acting improperly would be arousing her and not satisfying her.

There could be financial reasons for delaying the marriage - dowries and what not. It doesnt make sense that the acting improperly would apply to him marrying her as marriage is the god given institution.

    Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary:

[The father] "...is not treating his daughter well in leaving her unmarried beyond the flower of her age, and thus
debarring her from the lawful gratification of her natural feeling as a marriageable woman.

...let them marry-the daughter and her suitor."

    ink,

I agree that seems to be an awkward (at best) translation. In context, reading the surrounding verses, it's clear it's not referring to incest.

    JH,

Should it be the same today, biblically speaking?

Why not, biblically speaking? It is do-able, you know. And it makes a lot of sense if you think about it. It encourages careful, responsible behavior, as opposed to casual sex with a different partner on a regular basis (fornication), or sexual relations with others outside the existing marriage (adultery). STDs, one parent households, bitterness towards the opposite sex, etc, would not be nearly as rampant if such were practiced.

BA- What made sense then still makes sense today.

What if they have sex, thus getting married, and not liking it.....lol Will they be stuck together forever, knowing from the start something's wrong?

Brother Apostate, thanks for the explanation. I'm going to tell my j-dub family to get off my back b/c my fiance and are in fact married according to the bible.
