HILLARY STEP- Well, you certainly are welcome to your opinion ; however once more I disagree with something you said. You stated that just because " millions " of people liked McCartney and the Beatles music , it did not impress you. Perhaps you would be impressed to know that about 10 years ago or so a poll was taken of many of the famous rock n' roll artists and they were asked to vote for their favorite all time groups and artists . I believe the top 4 on the list were in this order as voted on by many famous " professional experienced musicians " ! As follows -
1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Led Zeppelin
4. Jimi Hendrix -

I see a kind of attack on the "Beatles" and Paul from Hilary- Step...
Indeed Beatles they were not so great musicians, but they could write great tunes that lasted for ever. Eric Clapton one of the best rock guitarist doesn't know how to read notes!!!
For sure we have bands that they were much better as a musicians from the Beatles. Like Deep Purple, that I believe they are the best...Ritchie Blackmoore a fantastic guitarist, with classical music studies, John Lord on keyboards, Ian Pace in drums. I mean they are great.
But regarding the Beatles we are talking about the history of pop music. They have make great tunes and indeed they have been developed as musicians, from "Love me do" to "Eleanor Rigby" and "A day in the Life". I don't thing that there is any other band that capture the spirit of 60's like them. That is why it makes them so special, and that is why they are the best band ever...
This is what I wrote in one of my previous posts regarding the Beatles:
Well for those who wish to see the remaining Beatles back again I don't think is a good idea. Specially since the dead of Harrisson. It is better not to do anything, just keep like that. To reunite the Beatles is not an easy task.
Personally I preffer the fact that they split back in the 70's, and it was the best time for them to do it, because they started to fade(musically speaking) They created a myth around their band, and this myth should stay like that.
The best band ever, that split and never formed again, not even for a concert. I don't want to think what would they be if they didn't split.Maybe like Rolling Stones, or Pink Floyd(bands that I like also a lot)doing concerts and live albums. Everything regarding the Beatles it was TIMING. They had the correct timing for everything, even when they ended up as a band.
It is hard to imagine the Beatles now without John and George. Each one of them contribute with their own personality to that band. Because the Beatles were not just a band. I mean there are much better guitarists from George, or drummers from Ringo. But they create a unique melodys and music that marked the short history of pop music. The future generations and musicians they can only feel the weight of the music that Beatles created and can feel the tremendous power the had over their fans. The Beatles they represent the generation of the 60's and the evolution of that generation that unfortunately went wrong.
For sure songs like "A day in the life" showing corruption of the political status, or the song "No Were Man" that it was written for the president of the U.S.A for the Vietnam war are songs that even after 40 years have the same meaning. Only the names changed, since Nowere Man can represent Bush...
Beatles were poets of an era, that marked the modern history of mankind

Not sure if they were musically fading at the time of their break up. (Abbey Road, case in point). Just growing up, and apart.

Just for the record, I am not 'attacking' anybody, I am merely passing my opinion on their music as you all are. My opinions happen to be negative in certain areas and all of yours do not. Paul MacCartney may live quite well despite my views of his music.
As I suggested, The Beatles wrote a few good songs, they came up with a 'sound' for the time, they wrote many medicocre songs and a lot of low quality songs. They overstayed their welcome by a few years imo. The output of Ringo Star and George Harrison's mainly feeble attempts at songwriting just reiterates that we are not talking 'major' musicians here.
What we were actually discussing was Paul MacCartney, who imo was and is a mediocre musician and were it not for Denny Laine and the professionals who played with him would have looked like a bit of an idiot.
Just for the record, I will again note that the melody of Mull Of Kyntire was lifted from a traditional Scottish folk song, the lyrics are imo too obvious for comfort, and it was the biggest selling single of the 70's. This shows us much about 'popular taste' in music, film and books. It tends to be manufactured by corporate companies for people with little discriminating taste.

1. The Beatles 2. The Rolling Stones 3. Led Zeppelin 4. Jimi HendrixI actually thought though, that we were discussing Paul MacCartney and his work after Lennon? I have already noted that the Beatles wrote some good songs, many mediocre songs, a lot of tripe and came up with a distinct 'sound' that appealed to the millions, from grannies to Charles Manson.
As a musician I would probably agree that the Beatles were one of the most influential bands in the 60's and early 70's but without seeing the parameters of this 'poll' you mention, 'favorites' not quite cutting it, it is hard to see any value in your post. Was the poll in the US or the UK? How many musicians took the poll? What kind of musicians are we talking about? Donny Osmond? Richard Thompson? the Mungo Jerry band God bless them.? :) Franco Mussida?
Where Paul MacCartney is concerned, I do not see 'Wings' in the list. ;) His post Beatles output was imho eminently ignorable and overshadowed by numerous musicians, songwriters and bands.
Your argument that he must be good because millions of people bought his records means very little as millions of people have also bought the music of bands who later admitted that they could not play a note of music and mimed their music while other persons sang.

Yes, it was. It was agreed that it would flop badly in the US and it became a huge seller in the UK and some parts of Europe among stout old ladies with buff raincoats and plastic babushka's. ;)
