Thank you. If you've never been to Niagra Falls, you really need to take the trip. It's only , well, 5 hours from you. Make a weekend out of it and go to Toronto also. You'll love the awsome power of nature at its' best!

Snow Hill Institute in Wilcox County Alabama founded by W. J. Edwards who walked! from Tuskegee Institute in 1893 to start a school for African-American children.

His son was a math teacher who told me, a shy, backward child from the sticks, that I had the makings of a fine mathematician. He also said that when he was three years of age, in 1910, his father took him outside to view Halley's Comet. He stated his father told him to look well because he would be 78 years of age before he would see it again.

We were so awed by his stories. It was like peering into eternity.

    Good thread, Heather.

Nomoreguilt - I completely agree with you. Everyone should go to Niagara Falls once in their lives.

And the white water jet boat ride at the at Niagara-on-the-lake is fantastically thrilling - took my breath away and got completely drenched. Probably one of the most exciting things I've ever done.

Thank you. This thread makes it possible to travel and see the beloved memories of our fellow members and share in the nostalgia. I'd love to have met W. J. Edwards' son. He sounds so colorful.

So, did you become a mathmatician? Math is my weakest subject. I envy you. I am good with any other subject, but not math. I had to work hard to get good math grades.

No, our school system was disrupted in order to comply with integration orders; I met the Witnesses and my life took a decidedly different turn.

I think you would have loved Mr. Edwards, too. He was brilliant, irascible, and brooked no foolishness. I often wonder what he would have thought of the Witnesses.

I grew up in a little town about an hour east of Memphis, but there's nothing interesting, so I'll try to show you stuff from Memphis.

The Hernando de Soto Bridge over the Mississippi.

The National Civil Rights Museum, at the Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King was shot.

The Pyramid Arena, though apparently not used by any major sports organization now, so not sure how long it will stay an Arena. Edited to add: This is also the place where I graduated from the U of Memphis (currently ranked no. 1 in the AP Division-1 NCAA basketball, Go Tigers!). This is also where the Tigers used to play. The Memphis Grizzlies also played there a few years, but neither team play there now. Everyone's at the Fedex Forum now, and I don't think this building gets used much anymore. I thought it was a nice addition to the Memphis Skyline when it came and I wondered would we ever have District Convention's there instead of at the Mid-South Coliseum. As it stands now, both the MidSouth Coliseum and the Pyramid are rarely used.

Some views of my hometown of Wexford, Ireland:

    alt

The Pikeman, a statue commemorating the 1798 rebellion.

    alt

A statue of Commodore John Barry, founder of the US Navy and a native of Wexford.

    alt

JFK laying a wreath at said statue.

Hook Head Lighthouse, one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world.

A watchtower on the old town wall, dating back to around the 12th century. The wall and tower formed the boundary of the garden of the house where I lived as a child. We used the tower for storing junk!

    Johnstown Castle

Curracloe Beach, used for the D-Day landing scenes in Saving Private Ryan

    National Heritage Park

    Wexford County Hall

Ah that pic of Johnstown Castle FunkyD - that brings back memories of when I was 11 and we hired bicycles and rode there from Rosslare. It was my first trip "abroad".

Xena - I love the bluebonnets picture. Beautiful!

Maxwell, I love that bridge. Mississippi River, right. I probably drove over that bridge.

Funky D. It's my dream to go to Ireland and the other British Isles. What a wonderful place to grow up next to. I bet you had a lot of adventure there. It looks like a castle.

Snowbird, I was in grammar school when integration was going on. For some reason, it didn't affect the demographics of our schools. It was also very welcomed and peaceful, other than a teacher having a tire slashed.
