Taps for HD DVD as Wal-Mart Backs Blu-ray

SAN FRANCISCO — HD DVD, the beloved format of Toshiba and three Hollywood studios, died Friday after a brief illness. The cause of death was determined to be the decision by Wal-Mart to stock only high-definition DVDs and players using the Blu-ray format.

There are no funeral plans, but retailers and industry analysts are already writing the obituary for HD DVD.

The announcement by Wal-Mart Stores, the nation’s largest retailer of DVDs, that it would stop selling the discs and machines in June when supplies are depleted comes after decisions this week by Best Buy, the largest electronics retailer, to promote Blu-ray as its preferred format and Netflix, the DVD-rental service, to stock only Blu-ray movies, phasing out HD DVD by the end of this year.

I also have to say it's taps for Blu-Ray as well. Downloading and a nominal increase of quality isn't going to get people to buy to many of them.

I've been following this format war since the beginning and always felt Blu-Ray was far more
superior over HD-DVD simply because the capacity was bigger. There was no doubt that it
    was a clear winner.

The Warner Brothers exodus was a huge victory for Blu-Ray.
Netflix deciding to go Blu-Ray exclusive.
    Woolsworth goes Blu-Ray exclusive.
    And now Wal-Mart ...

I created a very popular viral video a month ago called "The Downfall of HD-DVD" that was
a parody of Hitler being a HD-DVD fanboy and receiving news of Warner Brothers going
Blu-Ray exclusive. Yes, that was me. BLADES OF GLORY?!!

Funny thing is I own neither format. I'm planning on getting the new BD50 player that
has all the bells and whistles.

Glad to hear HD-DVD's death cackle.

Though I wonder if this will really do anything to DVD sells. Seeing as not much is really out and DVDs are just now getting to be cheap and every one has a dvd player and almost no one has an HD-TV to benefit from it yet.

Guess that means Microsoft backed the wrong format. Wasn't it the HD-DVD that was an over-rated add on extra for the XBox 360?

Blockbuster and Video Ezy in Australia have signed with Blu-ray...... at Christmas time blu-ray killed HD-DVD players here. In may the next generation Blu-ray {Sharp} comes out. It loads a Disc in 10 seconds!

HD-DVD Death Made Official. Downloads To Kill Blu-Ray Next.

By Rob Beschizza February 16, 2008 | 7:12:06 PM Categories: High Def

Toshiba put HD-DVD out of its misery today. Reuters confirmed this afternoon that it will cease manufacturing HD-DVD equipment, following earlier reports from Japan's NHK public broadcasting network.

This leaves Blu-Ray as the presumptive victor in the irrelevant optical disk format war. It now must face up to the real competition: the continuing success of DVD and the growing popularity of downloads, both on the internet and on-demand cable TV.

The end comes only a day after Wal-Mart announced it would no longer carry HD-DVD stuff. This will go a long way to confirming the view, long-held by cynics, that the mega-retailer always held the executioner's axe to begin with, and was merely waiting until it was clear which format's camp had the most densely-stuffed brown envelopes to throw at Hollywood.
