How many calories do you eat a day?

I was surprised to see that there are 330 calories in 2 handfulls of peanuts, and 440 calories in a big daddy cookie that I eat every day.

I'm not overweight, far from it, but I weigh 15 lbs more than I did 10 years ago. Back then I was a little too slim. I would like to lose just 5 lbs in the stomach area especially, not more, so that should be easy, right..

For every pound you want to lose, you have to eat 3600 calories less, or spend 3600 more than you eat.

So, I calculated how many calories I eat every day. I used to eat between 2000 and 2300 and I was inching upwards in weight. To remain the same weigh, I had to eat about 1800 calories, and to lose 5 lbs, I'd have to take in about 1500 calories per day continuously. At that rate I was losing 1 lbs a week. If I didn't care about my weight inching upwards, I would drink 2 beers tonight and eat those peanuts ( 600 calories)

Now that I'm eating a little less, I have a flatter stomach and I'm fitting back into my clothes better. I can imagine how hard or almost impossible it is for some to lose a lot of weight, when I have a hard time losing 5.

I just didn't want to keep on inching upwards and decided to try eating a little less. Some say that it,s normal to gain weight at a certain age, but when I googled that, they said its mostly because we do less exercise than when we were younger and maybe eat a little more.

    In my case, it's true.

I've cut down on calories to no avail, I don't think the red wine is doing me a bit of good when I get home from work.

    JH,

The reason it's hard for you to lose much weight is that you're already quite trim. You must have a good metabolism.

When we get older, it's hard to get that perfectly flat abdomen. Those who have that must be athletic or have something good genetically.

Yes Gopher, I do have a fast metabolism.

In the winter time, I'm inactive and that's when I inch upwards. I hate winter and stay inside. As summer comes around, I'm always outside doing sports and then I lose most of what I gained in the winter. But when I was younger, I didn't go up nearly as much in the winter time.

The information I have come across says What ever weight you want to weigh multiply by ten and thats how many calories to eat a day.

    180 lbs. = 180 x 10 = 1800 calories a day

    150 lbs = 150 x 10 = 1500 calories a day

    110 lbs = 110 x 10 = 1100 calories a day.

So I try for 1800 calories a day.

JH, are you a guy or a gal? What kind of exercise do you do? Exercise is the thing that makes the biggest difference for me. I gained a lot of weight with my first pregnancy, and kept it on for almost 15 yrs. Then one day I decided I just couldn't live that way, and I got serious and lost 50 lbs. I've managed to keep it off for about 7 yrs now. I'm a 5' 6.5" woman, and if I stay at 1500 calories and take a brisk walk every morning, I will lose. I do need to lose about 15-20 lbs. Last year, before I had knee surgery I weighed about 10lbs less. I was doing quite a bit more exercise, mostly weight lifting, and Pilates. I was losing inches like crazy, but not a lot of pounds. I was also eating about 1700-1800 per day.

OH god! I eat way too many. A while ago I was eating 1800 and excercising four plus hours a day. I was losing 2 kgs on average per week. It was bloody hard, now I've given up and put back on all that I lost. Not sure whether to go back on the old plan or try something a bit more subdued. Losing it fast sure does motivate you, but you get tired.
