The Stand is about a killer virus or something. But the survivors have to decide whom to follow.

The Stand is a great introduction to horror fiction, especially if you are a JW or ex JW. The premise of the majority of humanity being killed, with the few who are left caught up in a battle between the forces of evil, represented by Randall Flagg, and the good, represented by a centenarian black woman, sound very familiar to any Witness who ever speculated about life after Armageddon (tm).

Read the unabridged edition that was printed about 15 years ago. It's big, but it's a very fast read. I've read it probably about four times, and it's my second favorite King book.

My favorite is The Dead Zone. It was also the first King book I ever read.

His later stuff, not so good.

Oh, and look up his short story collections. Night Shift, Different Seasons, etc. When he keeps the story small, the endings are better, and pack more of a punch.

I've only read Needful Things - I shat myself reading that book. Played on my mind for months. There is a shop in one of our local malls and I haven't been able to go into after reading that book. **shiver**

    Stephen King is a genius.

I don't throw that word around lightly like many do in this age.

    Anyway, dude is a genius.

It is crazy to think of the publishers and agents who dissed him in
the beginning, who are now beating themselves up over not recognizing
    his talent.

For me 'IT' was the best Stephen King book I have ever read.

Its portrayal of the fear felt by children and that of adults and the differences that lie therein, I thought was amazing.

Close second was 'The Stand' for the reasons already stated by CaptainSchmideo.

My favorite Stephen King novel to date: Christine. A fast read, and very good.

FYI: I have the ENTIRE Stephen King Library, and subscribe to his book club. I have an entire bookshelf with NOTHING but Stephen King on it!!!! I even have the stories he wrote under his psuedonym.

I also love the collection of short stories and novellas that he has done. Some of those are actually his best work.

    Regards,

    Wing Commander

IT, The Stand, Dark Tower, Rose Madder, Bag of Bones...

I'd have to say that the Dark Tower series was/is my favorite. The ending was pure genius and perhaps the best ending of any book/series I've ever read.
