I seriously would not put it past them (lobbying local government). They are deceptive political operators to a depth unknown at any time by the Jehovah's Witnesses.
I watched them buy out a whole little town in Oklahoma, complete with a defunct Indian Administration hospital, to create one of their "programming centers". They pretended to be another organization entirely, and got several of the little city government on their side. Only a neighboring town's newspaper editor recognized them for who they were and started a years long fight to put a stop to it. IIRC, they actually prevailed, but they ended up alienating the community so much that the property was eventually unusable for them.
What they were doing was claiming that this was a "treatment center" for drugs - Narconon in effect - and would charge wealthy families with a problem kid tens of thousands of dollars to treat them. The kids were held in practically prisoner of war conditions, and the "treatment" consisted of constant scientology brainwash, followed by hot and cold saunas, emetics, diets and such - to "purge" them of their bad "engrams". One kid escaped and told all.
Similar "Dianetic Tactics" were used to take over the downtown of Clearwater, Florida when they were building up their "Bethel Headquarters" there.

Under the Public Order Act, it is an offence to display" any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting, " but it is a defence to show that "that his conduct was reasonable."
If it comes to court, lets hope that the lad and his advisors can show just how reasonable the statement on the placard was.
NB Judge Rutherford would be kept busy nowadays defending his followers for displaying the sign "Religion is a Snare and a Racket" !

Damn, too bad the cops are on the take. Is no one safe from the tentacles of dirty Scientology money???
I really hope that teen doesn't get jailed for "free speech." Otherwise you Limeys will be living in V for Vendetta!

But what if Scientology really is a cult? It appears to not matter, you just can't say it is a cult.
Ridiculous

SirNose - We Limeys have been living in V for Vendetta for a couple of years now.
I'll search a link, but MI5 (or is it MI6) have plans to bug our streets and lamp posts so that they can hear what we're saying!
I kid you not!

Should wear his magic underwear to the trial.
That's the MORMONS (also known as "temple garments"):

Gill, I heard that the MI5 really does have it's work cut out for it these days.
Seems that one of their agent's wives was part of the (prostitute) 5-SS-girl Orgy with Max Mosley (Formula One Association boss).
Agent got fired, and Max is facing a hearing on June 3 in which his fate is supposed to be decided.
We Ferrari owners and fans are waiting with great anticipation - Hillary Clinton is only an afterthought compared to this...
All whimsical fun, I guess - but this Scientology thing is indeed serious and dangerous business. To think a 15 year old kid got busted for a sign when old Max is probably going to walk and later sue for Libel.
