It's an anthem for open minded people. I hated that David Archleta of American Idol sang it (twice) and did not use the the first verse or any reference to "no religion".
He totally changed and missed the spirit of the song.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Imagine - the atheists' anthem. Thank you John Lennon.
Visited the Dakota and Strawberry Fields on my last two NYC visits.

"interpret" it with your own little spin
As Keith Jarrett said, It's not "what does it mean", it's "what can it mean"...
Such is the blessing and shortcoming of Art...

Well said, Void Eater.
As Seeker said, even the athiests have adopted it as their anthem. So, now we have commentary about its social, political, religious and spiritual implications.
Next, someone will be saying John Lennon was a reincarnation of some Great Master!
"Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can" ... sang the multi-millionaire in his big mansion. It always sounded a bit funny.
Of course, he did come from an underpriveledged background and I think he was genuine in the concerns he expressed.
It's a great song, timeless.

They have? Why did no one in my "Atheists Unite!" support group inform me this was my new anthem. I always thought it was "Losing My Religion" by REM!

Here is another quote from John Lennon and it's come to be my favorite. I found it in a picture history book of his relationship with Yoko.
"I BELIEVE IN EVERYTHING until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists even if it is in your mind. Who's to say that dreams...aren't as real as the here and now?" John Lennon John did believe.
Cog,
You must belong to an offshoot of the original Atheists....sort of like the JWs being an offshoot of the Adventists.
or the Episcopalians an offshoot of the Catholics.
LOL! I'm an offshoot of something, that's for damn sure! I'm guessing I'm some sort of evolutionary genetic mutant freak!
