Has the song, "IMAGINE" become more than just a song?

If you say John Lennon was an atheist, let's just say his message transcended his personal belief

and serves to unite rather than tear apart humanity regardless of their religious and national barriers.

Nah, let's just say his message was an expression of his personal belief that serves to unite rather than tear apart humanity. Cause that's what atheism does. Wonderful isn't it?

I agree with John, and did before I ever heard Imagine, that it will be nice when someday there will be no religious divisions. I thought of Imagine as the Utopia I dreamt of as a child and teen. I felt like I was one of the "us" he mentioned. I think deep down a lot of the witnesses were "us" at heart.

The point I was trying to make was the fact that 40 Jewish children along with 40 Arab children (not atheists) singing John Lennon's "Imagine" makes this

    song transcendent.

"I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong."

I like this one, too. He definitely was a thinker..

Jesus was all right, but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me.

You're just left with yourself all the time, whatever you do anyway. You've got to get down to your own God in your own temple. It's all down to you, mate.

It's a lovely song, one of my favorites of all time. I don't really care what anyone else thinks about it. Spiritual - atheist - socialist - I don't care. It speaks to me about the things that divide humans. Singers who leave out the bit about "no religion too" are missing the point of the song. Also, for me it's not just the words. The melody is lovely too - which makes it even better.

Another one I like is Danny Boy - which is also very poignant, with a lovely melody. The theme is also a universal one, not about the barriers that divide mankind, but about a mother's love and the pain of knowing you may never again see someone you love with all your heart.

Me too. I think the desire for utopia is the common bond we all share, even now, with atheists, socialists, JW's, Christians, Jews and Arabs. Isn't that what draws otherwise rational adults to suspend reality and join cults even in this age of information? Deep down, we humans are not that different in our desires.

Sadly, we are very different in the lengths we are willing to go to and the atrocities we are willing to commit to bring to life our particular brand of utopia.

It was always more than a song, it is an entire movement, of which I am a part, happily so.
