Has the song, "IMAGINE" become more than just a song?

    Here's another diamond from John:

I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong.

I love the song and would really hate to see it placed in an inappropriate movie scene that may work to override my own spiritual connection to both the words and the melody.

Sometimes adding someone else's visual ruins my own image of something.

Gopher wrote: If Yoko owns the rights to the song, then she can allow/disallow its usage for commercial purposes.

Can someone confirm who currently owns the rights to most of the Beatles songs? I seem to recall that back in the late 80's or early 90's the rights were sold to another well-known pop artist.

Suddenly we are seeing an onslaught of the commercialization of this collection. Now whenever I hear the songs in a TV commercial, stage play, or other new venue, I wonder who's making the money. ?

Ahh... I think I found the answer to my question: http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/jackson.asp

Michael Jackson and (since 1995) Sony own the rights to most of the Beatles songs.

I believe Michael Jackson owns the Beatles songs, or did at one time.

Edited: I see where he sold out to Sony.

    John was an atheist.

    Deal with it.

I love this song. It always makes me cry for the world that John longed for.

I wonder why Yoko isn't letting it be used. Maybe not enough payment? Or is the use not flattering towards the message of the song?

John Lennon was one of the greatest songwriters of our time. He spoke eloquently on many topics- including a world without religion. Which would probably benefit everybody. Yoko trying to sue to prevent John's songs from being used is wack. Yoko would sue Lennon's first son from his marriage to Cynthia if she had the chance ! She flew in on the wings of his fame , very obviously

To show how this song has become more than just a song,

here is a version where 40 Jewish children and 40 Arab children sing "Imagine"

and invite Bill Clinton to come on stage and participate.

If you say John Lennon was an atheist, let's just say his message transcended his personal belief

and serves to unite rather than tear apart humanity regardless of their religious and national barriers.

It has become a message for all people.

    Yes.

    Religion and nationalism are divisive.

Atheism- the recognition that we are all we have and we only get one chance to get it right- unites.

Very true, the song represents what we're all striving for regardless of where we come from or what our beliefs are. That's why it's still one of the most discussed songs in history some 30-35 years after it was written.
