:ARE YOU AN INTELLECTUAL?
No genuine intellectual would ever admit to it. It is those who claim to be intellectuals you must watch closely, like you watch all bloviators closely.

Farkel,
Very insightful comment indeed and just what I'd expect from your genius.
Terry:
I, myself, dazzled on purpose to attract attention. I couldn't help it.
Seems you have the same trait now.

Well according to my entourage I am but I do not consider myself one. I do feel the need to learn something every day.
Genius IQ -- check
multiple degrees, some in high-tech -- check
work history in typical nerd professions -- check
captain on sports team in college -- che- hey, wait, I don't fit!
As long as you use your intellect to seek truth, and to help others,
you will be fine.
Intellectuals as a group are ideologically intolerant, take offense at any percieved slight, are pretentious and full of prejudices, which they pawn off as universal truths.
Edit: (Please not that I am not anti-INTELLECT.)
ARE YOU AN INTELLECTUAL? Why not?
god... I hope not.

This trait also explains your tendency towards dense, obscure, convoluted, polysyllabic prose. You love to hear yourself here, and your formatting (longwinded and multispaced so that a post swallows half a page) further evidences this.
This sort of pretense and ostentation does not serve you well, nor anyone else.

I'm an intellectual compared to most people I know.
I dont memorize things.
But I have a curiosity of how things work.
I read a lot. Never fiction.
I hardly ever watch tv. Spend a lot of time on the computer.
But some aspects of my personality become obsessive. The search for God. Weighing God and evolution. Trying to find a meaning to life, or trying to give my life meaning.
Being an intellectual seems to be a curse. I read happiness can be found when one keeps things simple.
But I cant.
Either I am an intellectual or neurotic, I cant tell. Both maybe.
I did figure out how to escape the tower in 83 before Gore invented the internet and not get disfelloshiped.
Terry,
ARE YOU AN INTELLECTUAL? Why not?
Labeling is a useful social vehicle for measurement, but it is something I leave to others, as I am just me. Clever about some things, stupid about many others, inspiring about some matters, capable of boring the arse off Gordon Brown on others.
I spent decades of my life wrestling in the razor wire of questions for which answers will never be forthcoming. These days I am content to 'Golliard' myself into eternity, which I suppose answers your question, albeit ambiguously, as to whether I view myself as an intellectual.
...My intention is to die
In the tavern drinking:
Wine must be at hand, for I
Want it while I am sinking.
Angels when they come shall cry,
At my frailities winking:
'Spare this drunkard, God, he's high'
Absolutely stinking'.

Why not?
1. A blood card-carrying member for 50+ years in a cult that viewed thinking as speculation, rebellion, presumptuousness, egotism.
2. My high school electives were all non-academic; wood shop, metal shop, boy's home economics, auto repair, basic electricity. I was consciously trying to acquire skills of some sort to pioneer.
3. I destroyed millions of brain cells with alcohol.
4. Hypo-thyroidism further slowed brain activity.
5. Since retirement, I have trouble identifying the day of the week.
