Most scholars have come to the conclusion that the "fiery serpents" were Guinea worms, and that the serpent on a pole was just a visual reminder of the traditional treatment for guinea worms. http://pudsandlosers.blogspot.com/2008/01/guinea-worm-and-medical-practice-symbol.html

these two accounts are some of MY personal pet peeves with the Bible and the tribal sky god of the israelites, also. never made sense and flew in the face of everything the rest of the bible taught. good points made!!!

    Original Serpent = Satan

    Copper Serpent = Jesus

(John 3:14-15) 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone believing in him may have everlasting life.

Wrap your head around that snake, lol.

That sounds a little blasphemous, Awakened.

Be careful not to allow your personal hatred of God to distort your thinking.

Its great how they take about 6 lines in the bible about some ancient snake curse and draw a picture of it and have us teach it to our kids (nice bedtime story) so that they know that if you disobey God he will send snakes to kill you.

Our kids are supposed to visualize these stories and believe them as nonfiction, yet they are not allowed to read fantasy stories for entertainment like Harry Potter, etc. I know one sister that didn't let her daughter watch Shrek. Go figure.

(Why don't we make a story about St. Patrick in Ireland chasing off the snakes too. Has about as much credibility.)

I like St. Paddy. At least his story had a happy ending. lol.

I merely cited some facts...Draw your own conclusions...

I don't hate God, but I dislike the WT-God and anything WTS related..... I still believe that a god exists, but I really don't know much about him...

I haven't decided whether to believe in the Bible or not... the jury's out on that one. But I certainly don't have the blind confidence that I must follow the letter of the good book like a nice little fundy...

I hadn't thought much about the copper serpent before until I read this thread (thanks oomps for starting it). But it does seem to be contradictory:

No to Images/Yes to snake Image

Snakes are evil like the devil / snakes save just like Jesus

    WTF?

    Well, there is plenty more:

How about the holy dice - Urum and Thummin? How about all the superstitions accorded to the ark of the covenant? How about King Saul going to some witch or fortune teller?

How about all the hatred of "burning children for Molech" - in light of the bears, or the suggested sacrifice to Abraham?

How about the lying, cheating crapp that Jacob pulled on Esau over the birthright (and God seemed to just love it..)

How about the fact that King David murdered a man because he had the hots for his wife, and got away with it!

How about the god-sponsored terrorism that Judge Samson pulled on the Phillistines, and all that superstition about the long hair?

There is so much there that makes no sense at all unless you begin to view it all as an ancient mythos, kind of like the Ilead & Oddysey.

What- so now we cant be blasphemous on this board??? What is that anyway? Is the all powerful creator of heaven and earth really extremely sensitive about people questioning him??? The most forgiving deity in the universe gets really pissed at name calling??? Sounds petty. Sounds human.

    Sorry you missed the sarcasm.

I must have forgotten the "".
