I read a very well written sci-fi short story about a manned mission to Mars that discovered life in the crater of Olympus Mons. It was based on the assumption that hyperthermophilic bacteria could thrive in the heat generated by geological activity in the volcano if water was present in some form. On Earth hyperthermophilic bacteria are some of the simplest living organisms known to exist.

need to see a purple, slimy, tentaclized creature crawling over and mating with the Mars robot camera! THEN I am REAL excited!!! haha..................oompa

Maybe the water is actually purple, slimy, tentaclized crawling creature pee ? That would be exciting , wouldn't it ?

There are other implications besides past life.

If human visit or settle there, they can travel lighter for not having to pack as much water and other consumables based on water, like hydrogen and oxygen.

These are not the first photos of ice on Mars, as the Viking lander has done that, and there are several photos of evidence of water flow.

Perhaps the most stunning NASA photo of water on Mars would be this one.

Not impressed by water on Mars ? Okay then, how about: "A smoke and a pancake. You know, a flapjack and a cigarette? No? Cigar and a waffle? No? Pipe and a crepe? No? Bong and a blintz? No? Well, then there is no pleasing you."
