on the way home from work just now I heard on the news that there are 1000 fires burning in California from the central coast to the Oregon border. That's amazing. I hope all you northern Californians are safe.

Ooooo baby, fry those things up. I love fried green tomatoes
Yeah, but we're supposed to do that to the ones we don't freeze or can in November. I should be braggin' about my "red" ones right now. The commercial farmers in this area must be dying.

Thanks again for all your comments.
I've just returned from housesitting at an elevation considerably higher than my own. The location affords an ususually broad view of the heavens under normal conditions. It was a major disappointment for this stargazer to see but a smattering of anemic, fuzzy dots of light last night. It was the clearest the sky has been in a week.
We have a huge encampment of firefighers at our fairgrounds.

Where I live, we are close to the fires burning in Mendocino County. Yesterday was the first time we have seen blue sky since last Saturday. Looking west to the setting sun, you can totally tell the air quality is getting better than it was.
My sincerest thanks to all those hard working firefighters trying to put out the fires.

California's always burning.
Can't we take the floodwaters from the Midwest and pipe them to Cally? We're always in a drought and burning, and you poor people have too much water.

That would be great. You give us your extra water, and we'll give you...I dunno...avocadoes and fish tacos? You guys like those right?

The skys have been pretty smoky here in Morgan Hill (just south of San Jose on Highway 101) for the past 9 days. It really bites as I am not able to do my daily jog like I would like. The fires near here have been in San Martin, Gilroy, and several in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Smokey as heck today here in Sunnyvale. Drove over to the east bay, Fremont area. Every direction you look, nothing but haze. Normally I can look in three directions and see mountains.

We travelled through the San Joaquin valley a couple of days ago and the smoke was really thick, especially just N of Sacramento. When we got to near Redding it cleared up. Now, however, the smoke is filling the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon. A little of the smoke is from local fires but much of it is spilling in from fires in Northern California:

I just hope they can get a handle on the fires soon. This is the time of year that we get a lot of lightning strikes that start forest fires.
