So, most of the time I lean toward being a libertarian.

I'm with you...If the election were held today, I would have to vote for the libertarian candidate. I relate most closely to their ideals.

There is a Libertarian party in this country and they do have a candidate for President.

    I may vote for them..

I actually watched the Libertarian debates and was quite impressed with several of the candidates. I liked Bob Barr okay, not crazy about Root...wish he had picked the woman (can't remember her name). Everyone says that a libertarian doesn't have a chance in hell of winning, but really wish the American people would open up to the idea.

Many times a strong third party candidate can be a spoiler - I.E. turn an election for either the non-favorite Dem or Repub by siphoning off a significant part of the vote.

Remember George Wallace, Ralph Nader, and of course crazy old Ross Perot? Some people even thought Hillary might make an independent run this year if she lost the nomination - I guess that is not going to happen, but she sure could sink Obama's ship if she did it. I don't see any of the so-called libertarians having that much clout this time around, but -

My point is that in not every case is a vote for a third party exactly wasted. It just holds the danger of making something happen that you may not want to happen.

It's very comfortable to bash republicans or democrats if you know you won't be part of the policymaking process. Both parties have their obvious shortcomings but one of them will provide America the new president.

Maybe I am going a little off - topic with this, but the Eisenhower post made me think of it...

Did anybody else see that terriffic 3-part Educational Public TV biograpy of Winston Churchill?

An amazing career - he actually switched parties from Conservative to Labor around the time of WW1, then switched back to Conservative to become prime minister in the 30s and the war years, was ousted by a challenge election just after WW2 - (by a liberal), and then managed to get re-elected PM again.

That second time as PM, still Conservative Party, he turned out to be much more liberal than Eisenhower (even with his Warmonger Bulldog reputation) and begged Eisenhower (without success) to attempt a peace process with first Stalin and later Kruschev.

I had also forgotten that he actually lived past the Kennedy assasination, finally dying of old age (93?) in 1965.

Can you imagine a prominent (arguably the most prominent) American President to switch parties and ideologies over a career like that. I liked his style - he was not afraid to speak his mind as was not locked into one party propaganda like the candidates we see today on both sides in the U.S.

Sadly, most politicians tow the party line without giving any thought to what might be the right thing to do. I'd much rather vote for a politician who can think for himself and vote for what he believes in rather than just voting along with his party. Ultimately, I vote for what I believe is right and what is constitutional, I don't care what party proposed the idea.

Ever wonder why retirement age does not apply to the people running for office? I do.

Yeah, like airline pilots have more lives to protect than the President. I agree with you completely.
