Our goal in life should not be to avoid pain in others or ourselves
Pain may be a fact of life John but it still hurts. You can learn from pain but you don't have to seek it out looking for the lesson.

I agree. And neither should you be afraid to accept and face pain.
I must say that I think JD does have a point, in that without pain, pleasure has no reference point and hence loses much of its essence. Life is a spectrum, and we can't truly experience one end without some knowledge of the other. Pain does have its place, and a critical purpose at that. It only becomes tragic when the scales are tipped too far to its side, which is unfortunately the case for many of us here. There is a big difference between pain that is sought out and pain that is inflicted.
Tyrone, your story about the lasagna touched me. I understand it and have experienced something similar. I think that post got to the heart of what Coco intended with this thread, and I thank you for sharing it
When I tell my parents I'm leaving the borg it will break their hearts. Does that mean I shouldn't do it?
Nameless One. Your comments nicely balance JDs and I'm glad you like my little story about my mom and me.
Mickey. The Doc's needle may not seem good, but it is.
I 'envy' you guys that you can find peace in writing poetry and structure your thoughts in such a clear way when you are going through a wringer. When I hurt I usually just chase everyone out and lick my own wound and then try finding funny side of a lesson I’ve just been through before moving on. I truly wish though I could express it so beautifully and to make everything rhyme
I agree with both.
Yes, life has it's up's and down's. And we need both good and bad to grow and learn.
But the bad must come to an end in order to enjoy the good.
Without the kind words or actions of a fellow human being some bad things would not cease.
If you have the power to provide relief to someone's suffering, don't hold back.
Balance is the key.

John Doe and CoCo - the ying and yang of JWD. We need them both.

Thanks for your thoughts. Truly one can make a difference:
The Impact of One
One song can spark a moment,
One flower can wake the dream.
One tree can start a forest,
One bird can herald spring.
One smile begins a friendship,
One handclasp lifts a soul.
One star can guide a ship at sea,
One word can frame the goal.
One vote can change a nation,
One sunbeam lights a room.
One candle wipes out darkness,
One laugh will conquer gloom.
One step must start each journey,
One word must start each prayer.
One hope will raise our spirits,
One touch can show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart can know what's true.
One life can make the difference,
And may that one be you.

while i can agree that pain and joy are inseparable**
it is my thinking that the intent of the thread is to
rally us to the kinder side of ourselves... to BE the
speaker of that kind remark, to BE the doer of that simple act
that acts as a balm to a wounded heart
henri nouwen once said: the greatest force in the world is a wounded bird
we need to open our hearts to that power....** so speaketh the prophet
On Joy and Sorrow
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
Kahlil Gibran
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
Some of you say, "Joy is greater thar sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.
Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.
