I was not impressed. On the 3rd anniversary of Katrina, and now the same area possibly threatened by Gustov I find the following quote in the article infuriating. .....Sorry if someone has posted about this before.

"The volunteers repaired more than 5,600 homes of fellow believers and 90 Kingdom Halls, the meeting places of Jehovah's Witnesses. These figures represent virtually all such buildings that were damaged. In harmony with Galations 6:10 which urges Christians to "work what is good toward all", Jehovahs' Witnesses assisted a number of nonbelievers as well."

They forgot to mention that homeowners were requested to sign over their insurance checks to headquarters as a donation for all this volunteer work.

The quote below-- jw's fail to see that it is no longer volunteer work when they ask to be paid. My jw just cannot wrap his head around that. They helped non believers? what? the one so they could get some PR?

Carla, the statement, that they helped unbelievers.....seemed to be thrown in to deflect critiscism of just taking care of their own. You are so right about the collection of insurance checks.

The article goes on and on about those who gave up everything to go help others of course of just their own religion. There was an acutual.... just JW... relief center for the workers with "Monday night the "family" night for a bible study based on the Watchtower"...and I am quoting from the article.

QUOTE: "Often Jehovah came to our rescue. For example, early on, we discovered that trees had fallen on more than 1000 homes of our brothers. Because we had no equipment or personnel to do the dangerous work of removing the trees, our committe prayed about the matter. The very next day, a brother with a truck and the exact piece of equipment we needed offered his services. On another occasion prayer was answered in just 15 minutes, and yet another occasion, the equipment we prayed about was on its way before we said amen!"

What BS, are you telling me no one had access to a gas powered chain saw and ropes? Thats standard equipment for any volunteer organization.

How stupid do JWs have to be to believe Jehovah provided equipment needed to repair buildings after a hurricane but he continues to let the children be raped & molested !!!

Things like this make me soooo mad !!!

I'd like to document this for my dad, who still isn't convinced about the WTS. What's your source for this?

It truly is crazy that the witnesses even brag about being authentic and helping non-witness people. Lots of non-witness people helped each other - and you didn't see them crowing about it ! Ridiculous, Peace out, Mr. Flipper

StAnn, nothing like that is put in WRITING. Announcements will be made in the congregations to send donations to the Society to help the poor brothers and sisters in their hour of need -- but make sure your donations are marked "for the Worldwide Work" and not disaster specific, because OF COURSE the Society will make sure that the money goes where it's needed. That part will be in a letter from Headquarters. Then the local brothers are urged to volunteer their time and materials to fix up everyone's houses (no money sent from the Society), so they feel noble. Then if the homeowner gets an insurance check they are gently urged by the local congregations to donate it either to the brothers who did the work or -- wait for it -- the Society!

    It's a pretty smooth scam.

Stann, if you punch in Katrina insurance checks into the search feature here you get over 106,000....responses. I know some one here has a direct link... I would not take the risk of stating this unless I had read and believed it with proof with my own eyes.

Please remember this was over 2 years ago.

Someone one on this board knows what I am talking about!

Yah really ,They make it sound like they did it for nothing when in fact they gave the money to the WTBTS , I mean why not just let the homeowner keep the money if you are doing it out of good will ? There clearly was something in it for them . They do some very seedy things , I'm looking at how they lend money to congregations to build with and then they own the property plus get the people to pay back the loan . I just don't think that's on the level at all .
