Next time a tree falls on the ranch..I`m going to pray for a chain saw....God always sends people with chain saws, when you need them!..................OUTLAW
I found this to be a very interesting post. I decided to post it on Yahoo Answers to see if anyone there can enlighten us further.
Here is the link if anyone wants to read it and or respond with their documentation or opinion: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArEX9XtrzYidjoHkfF9O8.Tty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080828164853AAS8sJy
I lived there at the time. My garage was filled (by the SBLC) with supplies for the brothers. Most of it went unused.
Many of the brothers got frustrated waiting for the SBLC to work on their homes. Some found that if they called their insurance companies directly they got the work done sooner.
The SBLC cut trees, replaced roofs, took walls down to the studs and cleaned debris. All other work (actually making homes livable) was up to the homeowner.
I will say that a valiant effort was made to help but that the task was daunting. Nobody had encountered a disater of such magnitude before. Our circuit overseer was taken of circuit work and placed in charge of the hub. He was completly ovewhelmed.
My 2cnts: Their intentions were good but they bit off more they could chew. They need to learn to back off. I feel their time would have been better spent making sure everyone knew how to contact their insurance companies and govenmental programs that were available.
And yes, sending insurance money to the WT was "recommended".

Carla wrote: The quote below-- jw's fail to see that it is no longer volunteer work when they ask to be paid. My jw just cannot wrap his head around that. They helped non believers? what? the one so they could get some PR?
They forgot to mention that homeowners were requested to sign over their insurance checks to headquarters as a donation for all this volunteer work. "
I understand where you both are coming from with this comment but I think it's also important to remember that the actual work was probably performed by 'brothers' who volunteered their time and personal resources.
The fact that the insurance checks were assigned to the WTS does not negate the fact that the work was done by jw volunteers.
Helping non-believers? I'm not sure I believe that part of their PR.

I am sure there were very sincere volunteers not expecting payback....or a PR session in the awake.
But the BS goes on in this orginization as we well know. They even have photos of 3 couples who gave up everything. Why? How about the people who lost everything and then gave up thier insurance checks?
When people volunteer it is not for the purpose of gaining fame for doing so. The WBTS has never had any clue regarding helping the community so they remain ignorant and tacky enough to promote themselves.......when they help themselves....oh and maybe an outsider or two. Galations such and such.

I looked this up using the search feature and found out that it was a verbal instruction from COs, not in writing. So, nothing I can use to convince my dad. He won't believe anything based on anecdotal evidence.
I found it interesting that some people said that the WTS asked for donations for disaster relief but specified that the funds be made payable to the WWW, thus negating their responsibility to earmark it for disaster relief and substantiate how they spent it! Someone mentioned that the IRS should be notified.
Anyone know if the IRS was notified? Seems like this new Awake gloating about their disaster relief efforts should show they solicited funds for a specific purpose.

Christians to "work what is good toward all", Jehovahs' Witnesses assisted a number of nonbelievers as well."
This is very condescending language.
How benevolent. What good samaratians they are to stoop to help someone "not of their kind". I suppose whatever they did, it was a contrived token gesture destined for show. They were no doubt looking for an opportunity to make milegae on. The above comment is snotty and I find it very offensive.
Jehovahs' Witnesses assisted a number of nonbelievers as well."
Isn't that statement somewhat vague? What exactly does it say? What doesn't it say? How many unbelievers were assisted? and what sort of assistance was offered to them?
cameo-d.
Christians to "work what is good toward all", Jehovahs' Witnesses assisted a number of nonbelievers as well."
when I read that statement, it came to mind that they probably offered a bottle of water to someone and then printed that quote in the Awake giving the impression that they helped outsiders.
I was raised in this religion....don't anyone be fooled...the Watchtower Society has no use for helping anyone outside of their religion.
As we all know,.... god help you if you reject what you have been taught....your entire family will disown you.
Who is kidding who? No nonbelievers were ever helped by this organization!
