    oh crap...i totally forgot about Hawaii!...and yes you can snowboard there too on some of the mountains....i so love the tropics, and Hawaii has a more moderate climate than many other islands. I have visited there a bit, and am pretty sure it is an expensive place to live unless you are native there and they get some real deals on land etc.

    About the only other negative thing I can think of about it is that if you do like to travel and see the other states by bike or car, it isn't very convenient for that......oompa

    Try this CITY-DATA forum, it is a fantastic source for learning about just about anyplace you want to move. You post questions in your area of interest, and people who actually live there will respond and tell you all about it. Or just read all the threads about any certain area. I really love that forum, it is excellent and just fun to hang out there... you will find yourself reading for hours on end. Without setting one foot out the door I feel like I have been in many cities just by hanging out there and reading what the local yocals write.

    If a city isn't specifically listed, just use their search feature for the name of the city, and any threads will pop up.

    Here's the website;

    PS: You mentioned Hawaii... I've known three people who have lived there but didn't last but 2-3 years tops... they couldn't take the "road to nowhere" feel, as you described.

    Also, a former workmate went there on vaca YEARS AGO now, early 1990s, and she was aghast at how expensive it was just to take some friends out for a VERY casual lunch. She said 4 hamburgs and sodas cost her $75.

    I lean toward Virginia straight south down through Georgia, so both Carolinas too.

    Amen.

    I'd say that all states have things that make them appealing to different people. It just depends on what you want.

    Personally, I wouldn't live anywhere where the winters are worse than what they are where I am now. I prefer warm weather. I like the coast but I like the mountains as well. That's why I like NC. A few hours to the coast, an hour or so to the mountains. The winters are mild, the summers are hot without being Florida hot.

    I like southwestern VA and eastern TN, the low country of SC. I loved Hawaii but wouldn't live there. I like the mountains of Colorodo but don't think I'd want to winter there every year. Ski trips are one thing, severel months every year is another. I like San Francisco but wouldn't live there. I hated LA. New York City is cool but again couldn't live there. Upstate NY is beautiful but I'm a Southern boy...keep me in the South for winter. Vermont in the fall is wonderful...but then again there's that winter. The Keys are my favorite Florida spot but too hot in mid-summer.

    If I was a muli-millionaire, I'd own a house in the Keys, the OBX of NC, the mountains of NC/TN, a place in Hawaii, San Fran, New York and Las Vegas and just skip about from place to place...but then why stop there? I'd want a place in London, Edinburgh, Venice, Paris and Barcelona as well.

    Decisions...decisions...

    I lean towards the outer banks of NC, then Northern Cali, New Mexico and Arizona.
