If you have the opportunity to learn Spanish- do it!
English and Spanish are the two most useful languages worldwide.
Friends from Russia etc, often lament that their language is not the language of science or business. Whole continents speak Spanish or English- whereas if you speak one of many European languages you are automatically out of luck when you travel.
Of course, I would love to be able to travel to Russia or France and speak the native tongue but we are fortunate that most of the world will learn our language(s)...

I'm not saying that it is the best that everyone learns English but just fortunate for we English-speakers..
My dad is Mexican and we never spoke it in the house- I have rudimentary Spanish skills and am trying to pick up some more. So far I have been listening to the Mexican music station to sharpen my skills... :P

Why is it ASS-umed that because I am ranting about this I am unable to speak Spanish? I just believe that if you are going to live in a country that you should be able to converse in that language.

My 19-year old college daughter is fluent in Spanish.
We were at Wal-Mart once - the meat counter - and some south-of-the-border guys were there.
My daughter said they were talking bad about the meat and calling it some unflattering names.
When they realized my daughter understood them, they hurriedly left.
We laughed about it!

I know what ya mean Kudra... I understand more Spanish than I can speak, We always had migrant workers around when I was a kid... and I worked with some good Mexican hands cowboyin' in a feed lot. It comes in handy.

My wife is half Filipina, and we live in a section of Los Angeles that has a large Filipino population. Now she does not "look" Filipina, but is fluent in Tagalog. As a result she has overheard some rather distasteful and bigoted comments about her and I when we have eaten or shopped at the local Filipino establishments. The looks of embarassment on their faces when she asks them, in Tagalog, to repeat the comments they made in English are just priceless.

I don't care if they assume I speak Spanish. I do get pissed though when they get upset because I don't speak Spanish.
My Dad never taught us Spanish. He was born here but his first language was Spanish and he had a hard time in school being picked on by teachers and kids. So he was afraid to teach his kids Spanish worried we'd be picked on as well.
Over the years I learned a lot being around Spanish-speaking people but I cannot speak it.
