Lisa's mention of junk food harkened me back to memories of sitting underneath the shade of a big oak tree outside the Suwannee Swiftee convenience store on North Forrest Street munching on:
Zingers, the raspberry kind with the coconut on them.
So fess up, what was yall's favorite pioneer junk food?
on lunch breaks there was a gas station that had awesome fried fish (cod) and mojo dinners. once in awhile though, we could talk the car group into a sit down mid-morning complete breakfast at one of the diners, and those were the best! (other breakfast stops included the usual: doughnuts and coffee.)
As my sister and I got older my mother had to bribe us to go out in service. The best way to get us to go door to door was to promise we would have Portillo's Italian beef sandwichs (Chicago style) and fries. If she felt especially kind, we would go to Dunkin'Donuts before we started. Then end with a big, greasy, juicy, beef sandwich. Yum! It almost made being rejected at every door worth it.
Portillo's is a Chicago institution now. He started about 35 years ago and now is all over the metro area selling hot dogs and beef. If you ever get the chance to try it-go for it!
I would get the chili dogs when I was pregnant! We went to the one in Downer's Grove.
Did you ever go to their restaurant in Naperville? Key Wester - I think it was called. Yummy
Although for the absolute best seafood (Cajun Style) you have to go to Pappadeaux in Westmont. It is heavenly :o) (They have restaurants all over Texas)
Tracy and I used to pioneer together, kinda. See, she was the good kid (read REG Pioneer) and I was the not so good kid (read occasional aux. pioneer). Anyway, one time we were pioneering and decided to diet...we were all of late teens I think and she made me eat this godawful combination of yogurt and cottage cheese for lunch!!! Christ...I mean, junk food stops were about the only thing that made pioneering bearable. Needless to say, the diet didn't last more than a day (it's possible I even sneaked a snicker's bar during that lunch )
