If Obama plays the middle while in the big house folks will figure he's just another John Kerry.

I think most had him figured from the start.

Yes, he is. And a pretty good B-ball player - always at least three jumps ahead.

    My take...

Obama would throw Rick under the bus today -- if it were smart, politically.

Obama's choice of Warren is a shrewd political move. Obama will need Republican support in both houses of Congress to get his legislation passed in 2009. Inviting Rick Warren was not meant as a slap in the face of gay rights activists. Many are perceiving it as just that. Obama's advisors surely cautioned him regarding this -- in advance. He still chose Warren.

Obama has been friendly with Warren for years and they are both on record as opposing gay marriage. Warren's objections are religious. I'm not familiar with Obama's reasons for opposing gay marriage, but I would assume that this is also, to some extent, a political calculation.

Just as Jeremiah Wright helped Obama climb to the top of Chicago politics, a friendly association with Warren will buy Obama some political points with a section of the electorate right now.

    I think you nailed it.

Obama is going to use whatever human material lies at hand to get what he want-- be it the Wrights, the Ayer's, the Blagos, or the Warrens. Etc.

But I suspect....he'll be damned if he lets anyone use him. They'd better be careful going down into that briar patch.

I'm with Hillbilly. Let's see what he does.

I reply to myself, because I reminded myself of something I once read.

...a conglomeration of pimps, murderers, alcoholics, and blackmailers flocked to the party as if to a natural haven. ****** did not care, as long as they were useful to him....
'I do not consider it to be the task of a political leader,' he wrote in in his editorial 'A New Beginning,' in the Voelkischer Beobachter of February 20, 1925, 'to attempt to improve upon, or even to fuse together, the human material lying ready to hand.'

Being a master politician does not necessarily equate to being a force for good. So, I will wait and see.

    ...Nor a force for bad.

Waiting to see is just about all anyone can do.

Yes. I've probably read it 4 times. One of my favorite historical works.
