For You Know: Life in 1960

    You Know,

I agree with what you have said about all the problems worldwide, and yes it does seem bleak. But.........if you look back on history there have been many many times that virtually the same thing has happened. Look at history. I don't know where you live but from reading about our United States history, so many things also could have been applied to the system going downhill. I am sure that at these times many could have thught that the end HAD to be near because of the way things were at the time.

There are many wars in history causing death and famine (from lack of farming and also from a lack of money due to the war). For those people living at that time they probably couldn't imagine life ever getting better, they probably felt that this is it, nothing can change this situation. But history shows that man is very resilient and HAS come back from many trials.

I think that in this day of mass media (newpapers, television) we are more aware of things happening ALL over the world, not just in our own communities. When the scope of the problems enlarges, of course the groups of people screaming that the end is near or the world is going to collapse is also going to also enlarge.

I live in Arizona and I went to Tombstone where they have the famous "outlaw" cemetary. There are many others buried there also, not just outlaws. I am digressing. I went through the cemetary and the amount of people that were shot or hung was unbelievable, especially considering that this was a very small town. The crime rate was out of this world. If that were to happen today, no one would be safe. So in that sense we are better off than they were at that time.

I am tending to ramble, but I had to say that I do not believe that the world is any worse off than it ever was. We just have many more people than ever before and we have the media to sensationalise and spread the news worldwide making it appear like the world is worse off than it really is.

Sheesh. Get some new material at least.

The unintentional self-reference is too good to pass up...

    Larc,

Without mentioning the tremendous improvements in the social arena, it is obvious to all (except for the likes of YK and 'Unabomber' Ted Kaczynski) that the world is a so much better place today than forty years ago. Health care, living conveniences and conditions, travel, food production... the list is endless.

YK is just a living example of the comic figure shown standing on a sidewalk holding a sign that says "The End is Near." He'd be funny if not so tragically sad.

Even if this system does fall at the hands of man (a stock market crash will be brought about by man, ditto nuclear war) another will rise in its place, as has been the case throughout the ages.

The end has always been near to nuts like You Know, his kind were probably preaching the end of the world in the Muslim invasions, the bubonic plague, World Wars 1 & 2, yes, the proof is written down of the latter. Yet, what has happened? The world has continued. New powers have arisen.

Each generation has its own problems to deal with, but until JAH steps in this world is staying here. It may see many more generations, and many more "powers", but really we should be concerned with loving one another than scaring each other with "impending doom".

Man dominated man to his injury ... there is nothing new under the sun. Remember this.....

    Teejay,

It really is hard to get You Know to see a blinding glimpse of the obvious.

    Logical,

You are right. Compared to past history, our problems are relatively minor. I feel sorry for people like You Know whose only desire is to see disaster be fall us all.

    You Know,

Your essay is full of generalities, half truths and down right misinformation. You craft words to minimize advancement and preach doom and gloom. You state that "some" aspects of our lives are better, and "some" aspects of science have been transferred to everyday life. You should substitute the word "major" for "some" in those statements. That would more accurately capture reality.

You talk about the problems during the Nixon era, yet you fail to notice that the problems of inflation and high gas prices have disappeared since then. You state that our manufacturing is "rotted" and we can not produce our own goods. Please provide facts here. You are clearly wrong. You might come back with this: what percent of our GDP is represented by net imports (exports minus imports) Is it a high percent as you imply, or a low one? You state that financial institution's primary source of income is from currency trading. I don't believe that. Please show me the percent of revenue from major sources for financial institutions.

You say that the developement of the PC was a result of government spending on the space program. This simply is not true. Please show me the evidence as to the origin of R&D financing for computer technology. Especially relevant here, is the source of R&D for the transister and the integrated circuit.

Again, you state that the physical economy has been in decline for 30+ years. Give me facts. I have given you hundreds of facts that are in direct opposition to your statement, yet, you continue to make it.

Finally, stop writing like a political speech writer and start writing with some demonstration of an analysis and synthesis of facts.

    Logical,

You know, when you drop your persona, you can be quite profound. I really liked what you said here.

    Larc,

It really is hard to get You Know to see a blinding glimpse of the obvious.

That's something I figured out about YK a long time ago. I also figured out something else: why bother beating your head against a steel I-beam? No one wins. YK said something really nice once, but other than that one time...

    You know,

The only "end" that is certain is your death as well
    as mine.

Just think, after you die, life will go on without interuption.

Do you really think otherwise? If so, then get an informed
education that opens your mind, because you are narrowminded.

    YK,

: The bottom line is that the system religion that we depend on for sustenance and life is nothing but an intricate house of cards.

    There. That's better.
