I once had starter dough for a friendship cake.
Have you ever had one of those, CoCo?
Good morning, cameo-d!
No, I've never had any in my possession though it's been offered. My Dad had some for years, but I never baked at that time.
I'm thinking of making my own - does it act like yeast in the dough?

I have found some good recipes on line for annisette toast and coconut buns.
Another one I like was Chinese Flower Rolls. They are just a basic yeast bread, but the sesame oil and scallions add a nice difference.
When I find a recipe that "sounds" good, I try it out. If I really really like it, I have a little book that has a key...like a locked diary. So if it's a winning, trademark kind of recipe, I write it into my special book.
Do you have a favorite or two from the book your friend gave you?

A World of Breads, by Dolores Casella, 1966.
Sour-Cream Chili Bread
Spoon Bread With Bacon
The above - soon to be attempted (you can count on it!) - smell and taste pretty darn good whence I sit and salivate ...
Thanks for asking, cam!

That's a slick title;)

Mmmm, fresh baked bread with real butter; if I could only have one food the rest of my life, this would be it. Anyone ever bake sourdough bread?
I'll never forget, years ago, my mother was given a recipe for sourdough. You had to start with "culture". She went to every store in town asking if they had any culture. Hee hee. She'd die if she knew I ever told that on her.
G'day, Satanus:
I need dough so bad that I'll knead dough and sell the finished product.
Beats counterfeiting in the basement.
I have no basement.
Thanks for the slick reply!
CoCo, if the counter fits, wear it ...
Good morning CoCo!..The smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the house..The first bite of your creation with melted butter..Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!.....Actually a good baker does bring baking to an art form..When I was in Culinary Arts school I had very good Chef teachers..One was a baker..What that man could do with breads a pastries, would make you gain 20lbs just thinking about it.LOL!!..A shoe dough is used for making light and fluffy pastries..Have you ever noticed all the layers in a light pastry..In a well prepared shoe dough there are 1,000 layers..Thats a lot of kneading and folding, but well the end result.................................OUTLAW

I've heard of some cooks' fiascoes tasting like shoe leather, but shoe dough is a new one on me. As you said, gaining 20 pounds just reading about it! And you're a chef? Does your training come into good use in the wilderness?
Thanx!
