Is OBEDIENCE a dirty word to you?

Many ex-Jw's bristle to heard the word obedience.. is obedience love or legalism ?

Webster’s defines "obey" as "to comply with or be submissive to authority." There’s a definition crying to be disliked. Submission? Authority

Even the old wedding vows to love , honor and obey has disappeared.

Does obedience have a place in your life ?

But we balk at the idea of this concept for one very simple, very human reason: we don’t like anyone telling us what to do, and for us, obedience has come to mean "doing what someone tells us to do." And that goes against the very essence of what it means to be an American. the USA was founded specifically because someone tried to tell us what to do. I saw a sign from the Colonial era in an antique store once, and the sign read, "We will have no King to rule over us!" In England, we were used to having a king and calling someone "Your Lordship." When we got to America, when we got on our ownturf, we bucked that oppressive trend. No one is going to tell us what to do (from an On line quote)

It depends on who is expecting me to obey.

I hear people talking about obeying God's will for their life or obeying God's call. But it doesn't mean the same as the JWs. They mainly mean obeying the GB or the elders in the congregation.

It's not really a dirty word to me. Not anymore.

    Scarred for life,

Sounds like a great answer to me.. someone you trust... and trust must be earned and deserved right ?

What would be some good guidelines to earn such trust ?

Examples? I'd obey a police officer. Most of the time I obey my boss.

Obedience is for children and for adults with figures of authority. I suppose in some relationships, there might be a level of obedience in playfulness for some people. If I respect someone and they make a reasonable request of me, I might comply with the person's wishes out of respect or love. I am not sure that is the same thing as obedience.
