Is OBEDIENCE a dirty word to you?

The fact is, most religions allow you to voluntarily enter and exit. To that end, obedience is less a problem. However, JW's are only voluntarily allowed to enter without censure. To voluntarily leave puts you in line for severe sanctions, especially shunning. That is the mark of a cult .... AllTimeJeff

I believe this quote makes it very clear why Ex-Jw's have such a bad taste in their mouth for the word obedience . Trust and

mutual concern are absolute requirements for any type of obedience to be beneficial and a place of true individual comfort ,

protection and safety. Thank you Jeff ! So true that our greatest obedience must be to our own right to free conscience.

to be true to yourself before you can even considering submitting it to another. I think many at JWD see obedience as an

absolute inretractable course of action and therefore is unacceptable !

I have no problem with the concept of obedience to authority, the opposite of that is anarchy, which leads to chaos and exploitation of the weak.

But - to give willing obedience, I have to have a reason, fear of punishment, or appreciation of the reason for a Government law. Or recognition of my employers right to direct my actions when he is paying me.

Obedience to God? Sure, I would if He would show me clearly what he wants, I used to respect the structure of the WTS, but no more of course

Do I expect or want a wife to "obey" me because I am a head? No..just a little give and take and co operation and willingness to discuss things.

Hi ya, Callibaby. I was able to read your PM, but of course from JWN, I cannot reply. I may have to write you an actual e-mail. And you might just have to write a real one back. I hope you aren't in too much pain. 2009-02-04 19:30 PM

Caliber, you must be obeying me and taking care of your shoulder. You haven't been around. You should check your PMs. The function is working now. 07:09:45AM

    OBEDIENCE PROTECTS YOU

This was the name of a chapter in the old pink Great Teacher book. I was forced to go over it many times when I didn't listen. I hate that word and that phrase.

If I were to describe how that word makes me feel, all I have to do is change the spelling:

    oBEATience

Usually, reviewing that chapter in the Great Teacher book followed a beating.

It's funny, the word "obey" itself doesn't bother me. When it's put into the phrase "obey Jehovah God" then I have problems with it.

"To obey is like eating or drinking: nothing beats it when you have long been missing it." (Words of Hermine to Harry Haller in Hermann Hesse's Steppenwolf, as she teaches him to dance).

Cf. Nietzsche's version of the "ages of man" in Zarathustra's Prologue: first comes the "yes" of the camel who bows down and carries the heavy loads to the desert; then comes the "no" of the roaring lion who rejects every load; finally comes the dance of the playing child.

Does it stop at that stage or is it just a neverending vicious circle?
