Local JWs plan on setting up booth at mall and college

One of the local elders in my town, a real go-getter when it comes to all things dub, is apparently the new Service Overseer. Until recently (when I stopped drinking the kool-aid), we were also close friends. He still calls me a couple of times a month. I think to test the waters. (this is the same one who half kiddingly asked if I had "gone apostate"...completely out of the blue.)

This elder informed me that they were trying to get permission from the Society to reproduce one of the tracts to large size (ie, convention booth display size). They are wanting to once a month (or more maybe) set up a display booth at the local mall and staff it with local dubs...have a monitor there playing their DVDs, offer literature, etc. I can tell you this will not go down well in this mall if its approved. AND it has a very good shot at being approved since the Christian Scientists have an entire storefront there. AND ...since the mall is basically a ghost town now, they might allow it...nothing else going on there.

Now, this local indoor mall is dead. I dont know what keeps it open to be honest. The mall has new owners and are renovating it..carpeting all over the place, new lighting, etc.... but no decent stores anymore. I only go to the mall to go to the library and once in awhile I go to a restaraunt there. (Yes, this inside mall has a library...one of the first in the country when it first opened). The library is renovating a much larger space and will soon reverse the roles of the mall and downtown libraries...mall will become the main and downtown a branch). If the new mall management approves this, I am seriously thinking about raising objections with all of the mall tenants and management company. I dont like CS in there either, but they are tucked away, no one from CS is actively trying to get people to come in...its "just there." If the dub popsicile stand goes up, I can always go to the downtown library and I can take my food to go at the restaraunt....or not go at all.

The worse idea is that the dubs also want to set up the same "informational booth" at the local community college that I attend. That would be awful. How do I avoid that? I dont know how the JW employees that work there feel about it. (One local elder is an instructor and another brother is a professor and I think there are one or two other dubs working there.) I dont want a cult coming on campus trying to indoctrinate young people. Maybe I should copy WT articles where it is clear that the Society discourages college education...kind of a conflict of interest letting them on campus,..and forward to administration there?

The Christian Scientists have a small literature holder on a stand outside of the library on campus, but it does not appear to be well maintained. There is a club on campus for Christians of all faiths to associate, but it appears to be more social and that is fine. There is even a Pagan group on campus, but they are not shoving things down our throat either.

What I object to is the overt prosteltyzing, especially to young people. I am hoping this experiment of the dubs is a complete failure.

Even while a pioneer, I did not want to do that kind of preaching work...the so-called "Street Work" (tm) was bad enough...

any thoughts on this potential intrusion on two of my favorite places away from the dubs?

Quote from an email I received just yesterday

People have this wrong idea that pioneering is all about hours and door

It is... adding the good news of the kingdom ofcourse... ahhh reminds
    me of 68 :-)

saturday morning, sunday afternoons at their homes of course.

SNAKES- That's awful the witnesses are thinking of setting up a booth at the community college to proselytize their garbage. It is the epitome of disrespect towards why young people are going to college in the first place ; since the witnesses diss higher education so much. Your idea of informing college students with information from the WT societhow they diss higher education is a good idea. Then the students can see the REAL reason the witnesses have their booths set up - to prevent young people from getting a higher education. Bastards

2 congos in my old circuit were in college towns and frequently setup boots at the colleges. As you can guess, they got a fair amount of foot traffic among the lonely kids away from their family.

Insidious. And flipper, you are right, education is all about helping people to think, JW's have the exact opposite of agenda in mind.

AT some point Snakes, you will not be able to control all your surroundings.

    Only how you handle it.

you are correct of course. I am at a point where I really wont do anything about it. I guess any sort of injustice bothers me. I hate to see homelessness, poverty, victims of greed and crime...... If one lonely student gets sucked in because of their love bombing, it bugs me..however, its just one more injustice in the world.

There is nothing we can do about that or any other injustice in the world. We can only fix ourselves. Maybe offer a listening ear to those who ask for our help.

If they indeed do set up the booth at the mall, I will avoid it...should be easy unless they set up directly in front of either of the 2 places I go in there. If they do, I will let the managers of those 2 places know why I wont be patronizing their establishments anymore. If the dubs set one up at the campus, I will avoid that also. If I cant avoid it, maybe a few business cards with web addresses linking to real info discreetly handed out. Otherwise...I just need to let it go.

I hope when I graduate from the college this summer that I can move away from this area, get a fresh start where people dont know me as "that weird kid from HS" or "that weird self-righteous religious nut" or...in the case of the local dubs... "that apostate JW"..... and move to where people know me only as the person I want to become...without all the JW baggage......then maybe I will have real peace in my life.

2 Saturdays ago I went to the local flea market. Lo an behold! Who were there but 2 Jehovah's Witnesses minding a booth

filled with Watchtower literature. I walked up. One of the ladies smiled, probably thinking she must have a prospect.

I shook my head "No" and said: "The 1914 generation. False prophets." I turned around and walked off. I wish I could have

    seen her reaction.

The college probably has a "free speech" provision in its governing documents and will thus allow anyone who applies for a permit to set up an information booth on campus in a specific locations at specified dates and times. The dubs (perhaps because some work there) became aware of this and probably filled out a permit and got permission from the college to set up a booth. They would have to agree to some rules, which might include a "no approach" rule - in other words, they probably have to remain within X feet of their booth and can respond to any questions but probably aren't allowed to wander around and button-hole students who are happen to be in the general area.

The dubs will sit at their table for hours, probably reading the latest magazine (I saw one underlining her WT for the Sunday meeting). They won't be approached by many students. But they love this because it's an easy "long day in service" and they can count hours for doing nothing but sitting and chatting with each other or catching up on their "studies."

If you want "equal time," apply for a permit and set up a booth that offers information on "What the Watchtower Won't Tell You." They probably won't let you set it up at the same time, but that would be fun!

Suppose you ask permission to put up some posters in the empty store windows? You could make something easy to read like a check list of "How to Spot a Cult" or something like that. Then list some characteristics of a cult.

Maybe you could get permission to put these posters up near the library or local bulletin boards. Make some large and some the size of regular paper. Put them out in places where dubs are known to put out literature.

And if you decide to do this, please post your composition because I would like to make some for my area, too.
