Why are some people beautiful and others damn ugly?

Acording toEdmund Burke beauty produces a charming and benign effect, pleasant feelings of happiness, contentment and relaxation. "Ugliness" however would fall into the category of the sublime I guess, where passion, danger and drama prevails.

This is a complicated question for my brain right now - I've only had 3 hours sleep.

I guess it would be on how one defines beauty. What makes something beautiful or ugly.

If it's just based on pure looks (if we talking people) Lord have mercy on my soul and best I get back to bed to get that beauty sleep - I got lots of sleeping to do.

The concept of beauty is purely cultural. In Burma (Myanamar) they put rings on the little girls necks because the ultimate beauty is to have these enlongated necks (up to the point that they cannot take them off anymore, the neck muscle are so distended that they cannot hold the head upright anymore).

The Surma, a pastoral people, originate from the remote plateaus of southwestern Ethiopia, near the border of Sudan. Both males and females of the Surma tribes shave their heads as a mark of beauty. The women wear lip plates; their lower lips are pierced and stretched as ever-larger plates are inserted over time. The larger the plate, the more appealing the woman.

In the Caribbean, women with nice rounded butts (can you say J-Lo?) are the ultimate sex-appealing beauties while in Europe they are considered fat; extremely skinny girls with long legs are called 'garzas feas' which means 'ugly herons', but these are the ultimate american and european beauties. Piercings and tatoos are another example.

So, just as it happens with food, beauty is a learned concept... and it IS in the eye of the beholder whether you like it or not...

I would agree - beauty is in the eye of the beholder - that however is not the point. The point is WHY whatever culture you are from and whatever you find beautiful - the question is WHY. What makes someone beautiful to you as opposed to ugly?

Could it possibly be due to the "sheep" mentality of the masses? I was appalled when my youngest son wore jeans with a 40+ inch waist and he had a 28 in waist. The 40 inch waist on his jeans was cinched by a 50 inch belt and he look ridiculous. He said he wanted to look "different". I pointed out that most of his peers dressed just like him, so how "different" was that?

People want to be liked, admired and accepted. If a group decides a look is beautiful, the "sheep" in the group decides that look is the ideal, and to be like the rest of the group, think that to catch a mate with that look will gain the approval of the group.

In a way, that is why people and particularly male celebrities marry "trophy" wives and end up with the booby prize.

Being the grizzled and wise old sage that I am, I reject that nonsense and have only one rule when it comes to women: never love more than you can lift!

I read a really good book recently. It is called "The School of Essential Ingredients" Erica Bauermeister, author. There was a line in there that I thought profound. "Life is beautiful. Some people just remind you of that more than others."
