SammiesWife said: we need to question why there are so many appeals and so many years between the time of the murder and the sentencing.

Agreed. Don't get me wrong, SammiesWife... personally I truly believe the world is better off without some folks breathing in it. I was just presenting the "cost" argument.

:WHAT PUNISHMENT SHOULD MENTALLY ILL CRIMINALS GET?

A mentally ill defense attorney, judge, jury and especially mentally ill prison guards.

Or, if that is not punishment enough, force him to be a Special Pioneer in Northern Pakistan.

In order to avoid controversy and to ensure no one will cry foul, we should use the bible as a guide what to do:

A big X should be tattooed on their forehead so everyone will know what they are. Kind of like in the Cain in the bible.

If its OK for god to do it, then it certainly must be good enough for us to do it!

It's difficult to have compassion for someone like this; and yet it is imperative. To be cruel to mentally ill people is to be a semi-sane sadist.

"Punishment" smacks of retaliation, revenge, and the intent to inflict harm of some sort. Mentally ill criminals should be sequestered (in secure facilities, call them prisons if you like) and receive treatment, but not "punished." In some cases sequestration could be for life.

Hey Elsewhere...interesting idea. Right now they have a database for example of convicted molestors I believe that you can go and search to see how many live near you. I wonder if all convicted pedophiles had to be marked with a large green X on them to identify them as molestors, if that would stop any of the activity or make people sit up and notice just how unsafe or unsecure their environment really is. We don't hear about money being spent on cause/cure but when I pull up that list, it looks like there the numbers are extraordinarily high. If we could see the mark, we could see the extent of the problem and I wonder if we would do more to work on the issue or not.

    Interesting thought...sammieswife.

courts are about getting justice done - what justice is there in putting a mentally ill person in prison?

The premise of this thread is a contradiction in terms, at least here in the UK, and i suspect in most jurisdictions. A mentally ill person who was shown to have committed a crime, and it can be shown they are mentally ill at the time has is not per se a criminal, the reason is, is that for all crimes there are two elements, the criminal act and the criminal mind ( the actus reus and mens rea); therefore as this person whilst undoubtedly committing the act, they lack the second element, the criminal mind.

What Baba says is spot on too, there are people in the UK who will never return to society because their mind is so disturbed that they will always pose a real danger to society.

Why do we want to punish mentally ill people anyway, is it not better to treat them? If they do not respond to treatment, they should remain in a secure hospital.

    Regards David
