Sunbathing is not what made their skin darker, it was the melanin in their skin.

He is not asking why their skin is that color.

I think he really wants to know if there is any benefit to tanning if you already have dark skin.

Most people "tan" to change their skin color....heck...some pay big bucks to sit in a tanning bed.

I think he wants to know if staying in the sun has the same effect of changing the skin color of people who are already dark. Can they take the sun longer without burning? Does their pigmentation give them more protection? Would they have to "tan" much longer to notice a difference in skin color? Enjoying the beach and the warmth of the sun is a different thing.

This guy is asking curious things he has probably always wanted to know, but was afraid to ask.

It's the anonominity of the internet that makes it possible for him to finally do this.

When he finally satisfies his curiousity about black people, I expect he will next be asking curious questions about delicate female matters and sexual things.

Someone needs to tell him how to spell "g-o-o-g-l-e". Maybe suggest r-e-s-e-a-r-c-h. Some people honestly have no clue about how to find answers to their questions through research.

With regards to sunbathing making the skin of Homo Sapiens darker let me explain the following. Pale skinned people who are subject to intensive sunlight tend to get skin cancer. Therefore through natural selection those who have higher levels of melanin in their skin have a higher survival rate. It"s basic evolution and there's nothing racist about it.

I did not mean to take the word "sunbathing" literal hence the quotes. I was referring to prolonged exposure to the sun as part of a lifestyle.

Laying out in the Sun feels good! As long as it is not overdone, the Sun provides Vitamin D, as well as other healthful benefits, and gives us energy. It does not matter what a person's skin tone is, it is something we as humans enjoy, and we all receive the benefits of the Sun.

I can only speak for myself. I used to sunbathe when I went on vacation somewhere tropical. I thought it was nice to be a different color (from light mocha to deep brown). When I was a child I used to spend lots of time in the sun and water without any sunblock and I never experienced any sunburn. However, more recently I have experienced sunburn even when using sunblock. Once I got very bad sunburn after spending an hour or so on the deck of a ship in South America without using sunblock, so I tend to avoid the sun as much as possible now.

And darker skinned people who lived in areas with little sun would tend to get rickets. Although vitamin D deficiency is a lot easier to cure today than melanoma.

Edit: "be more likely to" would be better in place of "tend"

    Lady Lee,

Are you taking offense at what I said? I did not mean that as a put down. I have seen some people who really don't know where to begin or how to choose key word combinations for search engine. I think thats why a lot of people just find it easier to ask their question directly. That's why there are websites like answers dot com, etc.

I was giving an opinion as to why sometimes people ask such strange things since the poster received unfavorable comments for even asking the question.

I don't think I deserved your sarcasm. My comment had nothing to do with the fact that anyone was a Jehovah's Witness. I am sure there are Methodists who do not know how to choose key words to conduct a search, either.
