After the rumors from the Italian Branch, and now this official communication from the Spanish Branch, new information comes from the Italian Branch that this move is real, that the Italian Branch has already stopped printing and that many volonteers had to leave the premises and go back to their respective congregations.

Subject: Changes in activities at the Ajalvir (Madrid) Branch April 1, 2009
Dear Brothers,
The Governing Body has recently informed us that, after having analized the situation related to the European printing premises, have come to the decision to discontinue within a month the Spanish Branch activities of printing, warehousing and dispatching of publications to other countries.
Our brothers express their appreciations for the work done up to now in Spain, one of the four larest printing facilities in Europe, with these words: “During many years your Branch has sustained the Spanish as well as the worldwide activities, which has been enormously appreciated. The Govering Body is convinced that all this was possible only thanks to the blessings of Jehovah under the direction of the holy spirit over the Branch, as well as the Spanish brothers good will”.
Although we will not produce anymore magazines or any other publications in our Branch, we are confident that you will continue to give yourgenerouse support to the worldwide work, according to your possibilities.
Our Branch will continue to care for the rest of the work – which all other branches will continue to do for their own territory -, that is to say the assistance to the congregations, the supervision of the activities of the traveling oversears, the regular and special pioniers, the organization of the assemblies and many other things. On the other hand, it is obvious that akk of this will require changes at the level of the Branch, changes which will be comunicated in due time. For the time being, this is what we can already say, but we are sure that you will appreciate these information.
As we continue united our activities, under the direction of the organization of God directed by his spirit, we send you our Christian love (Ez. 1:12-21; Mat.24:45-47).

I think they ought to say, "this used to be possible when we were getting more money and more recruits from this country into the cult. We wish Jehovah was really real and the end was really coming".
Looks like the cash cow is going dry.

The blog thereafter picks apart and analyzes the letter, quite flamboyently & sarcastically, speculating on Bethel layoffs among other things. He makes an interesting point though: This directive came from the Governing Body. According to what was written in 2000 / 2001 or so, the GB was separated from the Watchtower legal corporations so they could concentrate exclusively on "spiritual matters". How is it then that the GB is the one to send a letter to the Madrid branch that their printing services are no longer required (i.e., a business decision)?
You make a valid point. Especially when you consider that most of the GB are nursing home candidates so they couldn't have come up with the researched analysis and determination for all this.
I've become convinced that that the Legal Dept is the real power in the WTS. I once thought it was a two party system running the WTS - the Legal Dept and the Teaching Dept. But it looks like they both sleep in the same bed with the Legal Dept assuming the "male position".
The Teaching Dept will come with the necessary positive spin to hide the true facts. I'm fairly certain that the GB had no significant input in this.
I think the true facts will come from disgruntled ex bethelites from the soon-to-be former branch in Spain. As usual, this will be the biggest kick to those that have decades of service to the WTS and have no benefits and resources to fall back on as they are cut loose.
This should shake all Bethelites worldwide into believing the unbelivable: The WTS is not the ark where they can reside their lives in peace and security in a spiritual paradise until the coming of the New Order.
And I think this should end the general public Bethel recruitment efforts too. (Do they still announce that special Bethel application meeting held on the Friday lunch break at District Assemblies?) The COs have always been scouts for Bethelite talent. Now they will be scouts for Bethelite drones as well. What they can't offer is that this will be a secure job.
God. I spent half an hour translating that letter, posted it on the other thread, checked back to make sure it posted, and today it's gone. Tried to respond on the other thread and nothing will post.

They may refer to the GB to give this unpopular decision the strongest support. If it was just another comitee there (even personally known to some people) there might be questioning. But if it is the GB it must be from Jehovah.
