Apparently, there are new rumors about a brother talking with people at the UN about religion. Supposedly, they told him that they want to "turn on religion" by taxing churches.

This is all OK with Witnesses because the Society is wisely taking ownership of Kingdom Halls and so they can afford to pay the taxation.

When I heard this explanation, I didn't know whether to puke or laugh out loud. The wonderful aspect of this folly is That it leaves the Society on the hook for taxes that supposedly emerge. Of course, they can sell off the halls in the meantime.

I almost feel pity for Witnesses who eagerly buy into this self deception. The concept of making religions pay their fair share is now deemed the end of Babylon the Great or persecution. The gullibility never ends.

Seems to me that taxation is not done on a global basis. How can the UN cause each and every country in the world to amend their tax codes? They aren't united on anything else! And they aren't that powerful.

    Stupid people.

That one's been around. I think the brother talking with people at the UN was Freddie Franz.

Historically, religion has endured more than just taxation. Property has been siezed and leaders slaughtered in places like England, France, and Russia... hundreds of years ago. If it happens again on a grand scale, well, the JWs will have been right once... heck, even a stopped clock is right twice a day!

Metatron, you should ask your friend if the reason the WTS is getting a "heads up" on this is because they were such a good NGO, never causing any trouble and promoting the UN's mission worldwide....

Or because, like the rest of the world, they're not considered a valid religion by the UN and so won't be affected.

Why would it be considered "turning against religion" if the churches are taxed?

Everyone else (well, mostly) are taxed...so why not the churches as well?

As VM44 says how it that turning against them. Dubs predict abolishing religion, not taxing it. Anyway the Society doesn't generally own Halls. Those that are mortgaged through WT are liened by the Society. Otherwise the congregations that meet there own the Hall.

    About time too.

Any organisation claiming tax exemption for pretending to be a charitable organisation when in reality all they're doing is running a large mind control group and raking in the money ought to be taxed to the hilt.

It'll just cement the persecution complex the dubs have and make them more loyal and protective of 'mother'.

Truth, are you SURE about that? I thought after that texas fiasco a few years back all the halls had to be deeded to the society? I'm pretty sure that all the halls in Jax are OWNED by the society not the local congregation...

I always thought the churchs should have to pay taxes...especially when I read something like this:

A former New York City pastor is facing charges for allegedly stealing more than $84,500 from his parish to pay for plastic surgery.
Preaching to the choir. Anti-Botox brigade
The Rev. William Blasingame formerly of St. Paul’s Memorial Episcopal Church on Staten Island is accused of stealing $84,537 over three years and using it to get Botox injections, plastic surgery and prescription drugs, authorities said.
It was unclear as to what drugs were purchased or what type of cosmetic surgery was performed with the money. Blasingame’s attorney, James Hasson, calls the allegations a “bad mistake” and claims there is “some kind of vendetta” against his client.
    Quick, freeze the funds!
Blasingame resigned from the church in January citing medical reason. He could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of second-degree grand larceny and possession of stolen property.
The money was earmarked for parishioners in need and the upkeep of church grounds.
