Any organisation claiming tax exemption for pretending to be a charitable organisation when in reality all they're doing is running a large mind control group and raking in the money ought to be taxed to the hilt.
Exactly. Scully and I have had a few conversations about how the WTS here in Canada should NOT be allowed tax exemption, because they don't do anything that resembles "charity work". They have no Soup Kitchens, they don't help build anything except new Kingdumb Hells, they discourage their followers from giving to any organization outside of the Borg, or even to give a bit of their time volunteering at a Battered Women's Shelter, an orphanage, or a nursing home.
Their defense is that their extended coffee breaks 'preaching work' is "charity work" but that doesn't wash with me. Jesus preached AND did charity work. So why don't Jehovah's Witnesses?
This is nothing against the average Dub. I blame the Slobbering Body members as they are the ones that shape all doctrine and practices. If they said tomorrow that Witnesses should be doing some charity work at one of the above mentioned activities, the majority of Witnesses would do it. The problem is that they might actually find that doing charitable works is far more satisfying that knocking on doors, and we can't have that, can we?
I'm all for religions who do NOTHING charitable, being taxed. Since the Borg fought tooth and nail when the French government taxed them, I can imagine that they'd scream louder than any other religion if that were enforced over here. While at this point they might talk gleefully about the UN 'turning on religion', I predict that behind closed doors they'd join in the battle with other religions who would also be protesting a tax like this. Kinda like when they filed the 'friend of the court' for Jimmy Swaggart.
For once, I would like to see the churches (and Kingdumb Hells) getting taxed to death. They do nothing to create actual value--all they teach is memorizing scriptures and that you will go to hell or get destroyed soon unless you become a member of their church. They have historically driven nations to war and held back science. So, by all means tax them to death.
Does the UN currently have any powers of taxation?
Mary, you've given me an idea. Since the Dubs love their coffee breaks; and since they take magazines out door to door but nobody is home to give them to; since they're so desperate for members that they're having "bible studies" at group homes for the mentally retarded and at senior citizens' centers; why don't they turn every Kingdumb Hell into a soup kitchen before each meeting? The pioneers could each bring a crockpot full of soup. They can put tables in the auditorium with chairs behind them and everyone can sit and eat while they listen to the talks and the WT study, etc.
Hear me out. If they don't accept government funding, they can make people listen to their spiel in order to eat. Making a crockpot full of soup for the weeknight meeting or a pot of oatmeal on Sunday mornings would be less expensive than all the gas and vehicle maintenance pioneers are paying out now. And they can require that the participants take a magazine, tract, or booklet before they let them sit down to eat.
One big old return visit/Bible study, all for a pot of soup. Just imagine the growth in those KH's!
You know, I think I'm on to something. If I actually believed in the Dubs, I might call my mother and recommend this strategy!

This rumor has been told and re-told for years. It's simple not true. Notice the vagueness: "Some brother was talking to some person at the UN."
First of all, there are thousands of people working for the UN, and just because you work for the UN doesn't mean you are a decision-making or even a policy-influencing employee.
Second, and most importantly, what interest would the UN have in trying to get churches taxed? I could see this as the interest of maybe a few think tanks in the US, and maybe some socialist interests in some foreign countries, but the UN simply has no relevant interest in stirring up a shit storm of resistance among the very powerful religious institutions (the Vatican). Taxation is an individual state matter, not an international matter.
The Witnesses want SO BAD to see the UN play some kind of role in their twisted prophecies that they will perpetuate rumors to confirm their delusions.
Does the UN currently have any powers of taxation?
No. Not even close. Not by a long shot. In fact, the UN has relatively very little power to do much at all. Not NEAR as much power as, say, the IMF, or the World Bank. Now those institutions actually have influence on how a countries' finances are run, and even then, only for third-world countries, and not any western nations (w/ exceptions; most notably with Iceland most recently going bankrupt).
But, what'dya know! The Witnoids didn't include the World Bank or IMF in their silly prophecies! So they have to make them fit for the UN.
Look here for some basic info re: what the UN does: http://www.un.org/geninfo/faq/briefingpapers/help.pdf
Notice that the primary function of the UN is as a mediator, or facilitator, between nations.
"...why don't they turn every Kingdumb Hell into a soup kitchen before each meeting? "
I dunno... that sounds suspiciously like the Salvation Army... not that there's anything wrong with that.
Funny thing about how "the truth" would have its share of urban legends.
Yea the dubs have always gome on about how taxation is a "turning against" the religions. Well if that's the case then we're all against the govt because we are all taxed in many ways. Just stupid urban legend.
